    Description / Table of Contents: Miniplate osteosynthesis is a standard method for the surgical treatment of mandible fractures today. Apart from easy handling, in the majority of cases it also ensures adequate fracture stability. The treatment of fractures of very atrophic mandibles as well as mandibular defects and comminuted fractures with miniplates and rigid plates is often difficult or only possible to an inadequate extent. Titanium mesh has proved successful for the treatment of such fractures. Compared with conventional miniplates this mesh is outstanding for its considerably higher stability due to its given geometry. The titanium mesh can be adapted and screwed individually in any situation, in contrast to miniplates and rigid plates. As a result, complications such as fracture gap infections and pseudoarthrosis can be avoided to a great extent.
    Notes: Als Standardmethode für die chirurgische Versorgung von Unterkieferfrakturen gilt heutzutage die Miniplattenosteosynthese. Diese ermöglicht neben einer einfachen Handhabung in den meisten Fällen eine ausreichende Übungsstabilität der Frakturen. Die Versorgung von Frakturen stark atrophischer Unterkiefer sowie von Unterkieferdefekt- und Trümmerfrakturen hingegen ist mit Miniplatten und rigiden funktionsstabilen Platten oftmals schwierig oder nur unzureichend möglich. Zur Behandlung dieser Frakturen haben sich Titangitter bewährt. Diese zeichnen sich gegenüber den herkömmlichen Miniplatten aufgrund ihrer Geometrie durch eine wesentlich höhere Stabilität aus. Titangitter können im Gegensatz zu Miniplatten und funktionsstabilen Osteosyntheseplatten jeder Situation entsprechend individuell angepasst und verschraubt werden. Komplikationen wie Bruchspaltinfektionen und Pseudarthrosen können damit weitgehend vermieden werden.

    Notes: Summary We review here the present knowledge about the pathway of import and assembly of porin into mitochondria and compare it to those of other mitochondrial proteins. Porin, like all outer mitochondrial membrane proteins studied so far is made as a precursor without a cleavble ‘signal’ sequence; thus targeting information must reside in the mature sequence. At least part of this information appears to be located at the amino-terminal end of the molecule. Transport into mitochondria can occur post-translationally. In a first step, the porin precursor is specifically recognized on the mitochondrial surface by a protease sensitive receptor. In a second step, porin precursor inserts partially into the outer membrane. This step is mediated by a component of the import machinery common to the import pathways of precursor proteins destined for other mitochondrial subcompartments. Finally, porin is assembled to produce the functional oligomeric form of an integral membrane protein wich is characterized by its extreme protease resistance.
