    Notes: Abstract Water is the most limiting factor for plant production in arid to semiarid regions. In order to overcome this limitation surface runoff water can be used to supplement seasonal rainfall. During 1996 we conducted a runoff irrigated agroforestry field trial in the Turkana district of Northern Kenya. The effects of two different Acacia saligna (Labill.) H. Wendl. tree planting densities (2500 and 833 trees per ha), tree pruning (no pruning vs. pruning) and annual intercrops (no intercrop vs. intercrop: Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench during the first season and Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp. during the second season) on water use were investigated. The annual crops were also grown as monocrops. Water consumption ranged from 585 to 840 mm during the first season (only treatments including trees). During the second season, which was shorter and the plants relied solely on stored water in the soil profile, water consumption was less than half of that during the first season. Highest water consumptions were found for non-pruned trees at high density and the lowest were found for the annual crops grown as monocrops. Tree pruning decreased water uptake compared to non-pruned trees but soil moisture depletion pattern showed complementarity in water uptake between pruned trees and annual intercrops. The highest values of water use efficiency for an individual treatment were achieved when the pruned trees at high density were intercropped with sorghum (1.59 kg m−3) and cowpea (1.21 kg m−3). Intercropping and high tree density increased water use efficiency in our runoff agroforestry trial. We ascribe the observed improvement in water use efficiency to the reduction of unproductive water loss from the bare soil.

    Notes: Abstract In a runoff irrigation system in Northern Kenya, we studied the nutrient interactions of sole cropped and alley cropped Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench and Acacia saligna (Labill.) H.L. Wendl. The trees were pruned once before the cropping season and the biomass was used as fodder for animals. The nutrient contents in leaf tissue, soil and soil solution were monitored and the uptake of applied tracers (15N, Sr) was followed. The grain yield of alley cropped sorghum was similar to or slightly higher than in monoculture and did not decrease near the tree-crop interface. Foliar N and Ca contents of the crop were higher in the agroforestry combination than in monoculture, corresponding to higher soil N and Ca contents. Soil solution and soil mineral N dynamics indicate an increase of N under the tree row and unused soil N at the topsoil in the alley of the sole cropped trees as well as below 60 cm depth in the crop monoculture. The N use efficiency of the tree+crop combination was higher than the sole cropped trees or crops. Competition was observed for Zn and Mn of both tree and crop whereas for Ca only the tree contents decreased. P, K, Mg and Fe dynamics were not affected by alley cropping at our site. The lower uptake of applied Sr by trees in alley cropping compared to those of the monoculture stand suggested a lower competitiveness of the acacia than sorghum, which did not show lower Sr contents when intercropped. The study showed the usefulness of combining soil and plant analyses together with tracer techniques identifying nutrient competition, nutrient transfer processes and the complementary use of soil nutrients, as the main features of the tree-crop combination.

    Notes: Abstract A nutrient balance was determined for sole and alley cropped Sorghum bicolor and Acacia saligna in a runoff irrigation system in Northern Kenya. Nutrient input including precipitation and runoff, and output through harvest and leaching were measured for N, P, K, Ca and Mg using adsorption resins, tensiometry and suction cups. Various management scenarios are discussed with respect to nutrient return. Nutrient input with rainfall was generally low in comparison to nutrient uptake or leaching losses. The irrigation water, however, constituted an important nutrient input, especially for Ca and Mg. Nutrient export with the harvest was large for N and K, but can effectively be reduced by a nutrient return with mulch. Nutrient leaching losses from the topsoil (0–30 cm) were lower in the sorghum monoculture than in the tree-based systems. In the subsoil (120 cm), however, leaching was effectively reduced by the trees. In the agroforestry system, leaching losses of N under the sorghum were 53% lower than in the sorghum monoculture. This could be attributed to a higher root abundance and a higher ratio of nutrient uptake-to-leaching in the agroforestry system than in the monocultures indicating a higher nutrient efficiency. The lower leaching losses in the agroforestry system compared to the crop monoculture could not compensate for the additional nutrient export in tree biomass. A nutrient return by mulching crop residues and acacia leaves was essential for a positive nutrient balance in the agroforestry system. Combining annual and perennial crops provided a higher internal nutrient cycling than the monocultures.

    Notes: Abstract Fine root turnover (〈2 mm) was determined from repeated measurements of root distribution up to 120 cm soil depth by core sampling in four month intervals. Sole cropped Sorghum bicolor and Acacia saligna were compared with the agroforestry combination in an alley cropping system in semiarid Northern Kenya. Three methods for the calculation of root production were used: the max-min, balancing-transfer and compartment-flow method. The highest root biomass was found in the topsoil for all cropping systems, though trees had a deeper root system. Trees and crops had a similar amount of below-ground biomass during the vegetation period (0.3 and 0.4 Mg DM ha-1 120 cm-1), but in the agroforestry combination root biomass was more than the sum of the sole cropped systems (1.1 Mg DM ha-1 120 cm-1). The tree system showed a very static root development with little fluctuation between seasons, whereas root biomasses were very dynamic in the crop and tree + crop systems. Root production was highest in the tree + crop combination with 2.1 Mg DM ha-1 a-1, with about 50% less in sole cropped trees and crops. Root N input to soil decreased in the order tree + crop〉tree〉crop system with 13.5, 11.0 and 3.2 kg N ha-1 a-1, and cannot be estimated from total below-ground biomass or carbon turnover, as N is accumulated in senescing roots. Such low N input to soil stresses the need for investigating other processes of nutrient input from roots to soil. Areas of highest N input were identified in the topsoil under the tree row in the tree system. Resource utilisation and C and N input to soil were highest with a combination of annual and perennial crops.

    Notes: Natural hail impact tests are scarcely available because hailstorms are limited to a small area and cannot be predicted regarding time, place and intensity. Therefore we relied on laboratory tests simulating natural hailstones by polyamide balls (5-50 mm dia.) whose final velocity could be varied according to meteorological data. So the influence of diameter (weight) and velocity of the artificial hailstones could be taken into consideration independently.The energy of damage or equivalent natural hailstone diameter were determined for 16 mm double skin sheet from PMMA as 0.2 J (14 mm dia.) for star shaped cracks and 2 J (26 mm dia.) for holes. These values do not significantly decrease after 10 years weathering. 10 mm double skin sheets from PC show an extremly high energy of damage of abt. 10 J (38 mm dia.) which decreases to a medium level of 2 J (26 mm dia.) after several years weathering. This decrease is remarkably reduced by weather resistant protective coating.As hailstorms consist to more than 80% of hailstones below 10 mm dia. (0.04 J) the mentioned sheet materials are quite hail resistant also after long weathering periods, but they cannot withstand an extreme hail catastrophe as in Munich July 12, 1984.

    Description / Table of Contents: The copolymerization of acrylonitrile with maleic anhydride was investigated to synthesize acylic reactive polymers for manufacture of membranes that serve as support for covalent enzyme immobilization. The free-radical copolymer synthesis was carried out in solution (N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylacetamide (DMAC), γ-butyrolactone, ethylene carbonate), by precipitation polymerization (dioxane) as well as bulk polymerization. The polymers were characterized using IR spectroscopy, elementary analysis, NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, viscosity measurements, osmometry and potentiometry.The kinetic parameters were followed by dilatometric measurements up to high conversions. The anhydride content in the monomer mixtures showed a significant influence on the rate of polymerization and the molecular weight. With raised concentration of anhydride the polymerization rate and molecular weights decreased. Film forming polymers (M̄η 〉 30 000 g/mol) can be obtained by all copolymerization procedures with exception of solution polymerization in DMF and DMAC, respectively. The content of maleic anhydride in the membrane polymers did not exceed 5 mol-%, even though the maleic anhydride content in the monomer mixtures was raised up to the equimolar mixture. Nevertheless, such low maleic anhydride content of prepared membranes is enough for successful enzyme immobilization with amyloglucosidase (copolymer was prepared in γ-butyrolactone, M̄η = 49 000 g/mol, cPMSA = 0,3 mol-%).
    Notes: Die Copolymerisation des Acrylnitrils mit Maleinsäureanhydrid (MSA) wurde mit dem Ziel untersucht, acylfunktionalisierte Reaktivpolymere mit Filmbildungseigenschaften herzustellen, um diese in der Anwendung als Membran für kovalente Enzymfixierungen zu nutzen. Die radikalinitiierte Synthese der Copolymeren wurde in Lösung (Dimethylformamid (DMF), Dimethylacetamid (DMAC), γ-Butyrolacton, Ethylencarbonat), durch Fällungscopolymerisation (Dioxan) sowie in Substanz durchgeführt.Die Polymercharakterisierung erfolgte durch IR-Spektroskopie, Elementaranalyse, Kernresonanzspektroskopie, Gelpermeationschromatographie, Viskosimetrie, Osmometrie und Potentiometrie.Die Kinetik wurde durch dilatometrische Untersuchungen bis zu hohen Umsätzen verfolgt. Danach weist der Anhydridgehalt im Monomergemisch einen signifikanten Einfluß auf die Bruttopolymerisationsgeschwindigkeit und die Molmasse der Polymeren auf. Mit steigendem Anhydridanteil wird die Bruttopolymerisationsgeschwindigkeit herabgesetzt und eine Verringerung der Molmasse herbeigeführt. Die Copolymerisation von Acrylnitril und Maleinsäureanhydrid führt mit Ausnahme der Lösungspolymerisation in DMF bzw. DMAC zu Polymeren mit Molmassen oberhalb 30 000 g/mol, was ihre Anwendung als Membran ermöglicht. Die Einbaurate an Maleinsäureanhydrid in den Membranpolymeren ist bis einschließlich einer äquimolaren Zusammensetzung des Monomergemischs nicht größer als 5 mol-%. Derartig niedrige MSA-Reaktivgruppenanteile erweisen sich jedoch als ausreichend, um an einer aus einem Lösungspolymerisat (γ-Butyrolacton, M̄η = 49 000 g/mol, cPMSA = 0,3 mol-%) formierten Membran eine Enzymimmobilisierung mit Amyloglucosidase nachzuweisen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Three different titration methods were proved with respect to accuracy, reproducibility and handling for the determination of maleic anhydride (MSA) content in acrylonitrile (AN) copolymers in form of poly(AN-co-MSA) and poly(AN-co-styrene-co-MSA). The comparison comprises (i) the combined method A/H characterized by the reaction of anhydride groups (AG) with aniline and titration of the formed monoacid with methanolic KOH (A) and the complete hydrolysis of AG and titration of acid groups (SG) with aqueous NaOH (H), (ii) method B based on the conversion of AG with n-butylamine (BA) and back-titration of unreacted amine with HClO4 in glacial acetic acid and (iii) method C consisting of the reaction of AG with p-chloroaniline (pCA) followed by Cl-determination after the Schöniger-decomposition. Whereas all mentioned methods are suitable for the determination of AG in the presence of initial SG, the combination of A/H additionally allows the simultaneous determination of AG and SG. In comparison with the other methods the combination of A/H is to be favoured due to the possibility to obtain additional information about SG and because of the better results in accuracy, reproducibility and handling. By means of FTIR spectroscopy the content of AG and SG was estimated qualitatively and a correlation between the spectroscopic and potentiometric data of AG was discovered.
    Notes: Zur Bestimmung des Maleinsäreanhydrid(MSA)-Gehaltes in Acrylnitril(AN)-Copolymeren des Typs Poly(AN-co-MSA) bzw. Poly(AN-co-Styrol-co-MSA) wurden drei verschiedene Titrationsmethoden hinsichtlich ihrer Richtigkeit, Reproduzierbarkeit sowie ihres Zeitaufwandes geprüft. Miteinander verglichen wurden (i) eine Methodenkombination A/H bestehend aus dem Teilschritt A, einer Umsetzung der Anhydridgruppen (AG) mit Anilin einschließlich der Titration der Monosäuregruppen mit methanolischer KOH, und dem Teilschritt H, einer vollständigen Hydrolyse der AG und Titration der Säuregruppen (SG) mit wäßriger NaOH, (ii) Methode B basierend auf der Reaktion der AG mit n-Butylamin (BA) und der Rücktitration des nicht umgesetzten Amins mit Perchlorsäure (HClO4) in Eisessig und (iii) Methode C, beruhend auf der Umsetzung der AG mit p-Chloranilin (pCA) und nachfolgender Chlorbestimmung durch Schöniger-Aufschluß. Während sich alle genannten Methoden prinzipiell für die AG-Bestimmung in Gegenwart initialer SG empfehlen, ist darüber hinaus über A/H eine simultane Bestimmung von AG und SG möglich. Wegen dieses zusätzlichen Informationsgewinns, ihrer besseren Reproduzierbarkeit, der erhöhten Richtigkeit sowie des geringeren zeitlichen und apparativen Aufwandes ist die Kombination A/H zu favorisieren. Mit Hilfe der FTIR-Spektroskopie wurde der Gehalt an AG und SG qualitativ verfolgt und eine Korrelation zwischen den Bandenintensitäten der AG und den potentiometrisch erhaltenen Werten gefunden.
