Abstract Twenty children with achalasia of the cardia were seen at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne in the years 1953 to 1986. The clinical presentation, investigations, and treatment are discussed. Ten children have been followed for 10 or more years and their late follow-up results are reported. The majority are symptomatic, and this is usually related to oesophageal dysmotility rather than gastro-oesophageal reflux.
