Notes: Summary Differential diagnostic importance of acid phosphatase and beta-glucuronidase reactions was studied in bone marrow smears of 52 patients with acute leukaemias. Both reactions showed either diffuse or simultaneously diffuse and granular positivity in the medullary blast cells of 34 patients suffering from ANLL. A strong diffuse positivity of acid phosphatase suggested the possibility of AMOL. Beta-glucuronidase and acid phosphatase reactions were exclusively granular in every positive case of ALL. Increased acid phosphatase activity was found in T-ALL while beta-glucuronidase showed increased activity also in (non-T, non-B)-ALL on several occasions.

Notes: A simple equation for the evaluation of resonance integrals from overlap integrals and ionization potentials of the molecular fragments is suggested for molecules-in-molecules π electron calculations. The singlet π → π* transition energies of some benzene derivatives containing donor substituents were calculated. The best results were obtained if in the expression of the resonance integral the first experimental ionization potential of the methyl derivative of the donor groups is used.

Notes: The π-electronic structure and spectra of the protonated aromatic carboxylic acids, aldehydes and ketones have been calculated by the Pariser-Parr-Pople method. An essential modification was that the positive charge has been considered as delocalized within the substituent group. The best agreement for the cation of benzoic acid was obtained using a symmetric carboxy model with equal charges on both oxygen atoms. This model gave equally good results for the protonated fluoro-, chloro- and methylbenzoic acids, as well. The delocalized charge model was successfully applied in the calculation of aromatic aldehydes and ketones. The methyl group was treated both as a one- and as a two-centre substituent.
