    Notes: Abstract We evaluated the bone mineral density (BMD) of the bilateral femurs in 112 patients with hemiplegia using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in order to elucidate the effect of disuse and immobilization. BMD of the paretic side was significantly reduced compared with that of the nonparetic side in hemiplegic patients (femoral neck 0.582±0.014 g/cm2 versus 0.623±0.014 g/cm2 and total femur 0.645±0.02 g/cm2 versus 0.702±0.017 g/cm2; mean±SEM, P〈0.01, respectively). Femoral BMD in both the paretic and nonparetic limb had significantly (P〈0.01) lower values than in age- and sex-matched controls, but the paretic side had a more significant reduction of BMD; femoral neck-20% versus -14% and total femur -24% versus -18%. In addition, patients with impaired activities of daily living (ADL), evaluated by a mobility score, had significantly decreased BMD ratios of paretic/nonparetic side than patients with improved ADL (femoral neck 91% versus 97%, P〈0.01 and total femur 89% versus 94%, P〈0.05). Our results indicated that BMD of both femurs of patients with hemiplegia was reduced, although the paretic side showed a greater BMD decrease. This decrease might be prevented or reduced by improvement of ADL.

    Notes: Summary Health status of the workers in dye-producing plants were examined repeatedly in winter and in summer. The items studied cover 1) diazo-positive metabolites in urine 2) methemoglobinaemia, Heinz bodies, methemoglobin reductases and anaemia, and 3) liver function. The urinary diazo-positive metabolite level in the exposed was higher than that in the non-exposed and marked a conspicuous increase in summer as compared in winter, indicating significant intake of the aromatic nitro-amino compounds, while no significant methemoglobinaemia, Heinz bodies, anaemia nor disturbed liver function was observed in any group of the examinees. The results were discussed in connection with the dose-effect relationship, and compared with the experiences in the past.

    Notes: Summary N-acetylchitooligosaccharides, fragments of the backbone of fungal cell wall, trigger rapid membrane responses such as transient depolarization, and elicit defense reactions including phytoalexin production in suspension-cultured rice cells. The generation of reactive oxygen species triggered by the oligosaccharide signal was analyzed with EPR spectroscopy using a spin trapping system, 4-pyridyl 1-oxideN-tert-butyl nitrone (4-POBN) and ethanol. OH generation was detected as the α-hydroxyethyl adduct of 4-POBN after elicitation. Superoxide dismutase, catalase or diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid, a metal chelator, inhibited $${}^ \cdot O$$ generation, proposing the following reaction sequence: generation of $${}^ \cdot O_{2^ - } $$ in response to the oligosaccharide elicitor, followed by dismutation to H2O2, then generation of $${}^ \cdot OH$$ by the reaction of H2O2 with Fe2+ that is generated by the reduction of Fe3+ by $${}^ \cdot O_{2^ - } $$ . Generation of the same reactive oxygen species was also triggered by calyculin A, a protein phosphatase inhibitor, alone, suggesting the involvement of protein phosphorylation in its regulation during the oligosaccharide signal transduction.
