Notes: Abstract The influence of silver, in the range of 0.02 wt% to 0.07 wt%, on the electrochemical and corrosion properties of Pb–Ca–Sn–Al grid alloy in sulphuric acid solutions at room temperature was investigated by potentiodynamic and potentiostatic methods. The introduction of Ag into a common grid alloy of Pb–Ca–Sn–Al confers some important features on the alloy. Potentiodynamic anodic polarisation measurements provided a qualitative overview of the activating, passivating and transpassivating processes which correspond to Pb → PbSO4, PbSO4 → PbO2 reactions respectively. Cyclic voltammetric measurements provided information on the effect of Ag on the oxidation of PbSO4 to PbO2. The addition of Ag refined the grains and enhanced the passivation of the electrode and its corrosion resistance. A decrease in the oxygen evolution overpotential and an increase in the hydrogen evolution overpotential with the additions of Ag were also observed during the experiments.

Notes: Abstract The influence of silver, in the range of 0.02 to 0.07wt%, on the electrochemical and corrosion properties of Pb–Ca–Sn–Al grid alloy in sulphuric acid solutions at room temperature was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). EIS was used to study the effect of silver on the surface layer(s) of an electrode under different conditions, while the oxide layers produced on the working electrode surface were examined by SEM. The addition of silver in the alloy inhibits the reactions of Pb to PbSO4 and PbSO4 to PbO2 and produces a more dense oxide layer which could enhance the corrosion resistance of the alloy.

Notes: Abstract Multifilament Ag-sheathed BiPbSrCaCuO (2223) superconducting tapes containing 49 filaments were fabricated by the powder-in-tube route and the roll-anneal process. The transport critical current densityJ c was 1.3×104 A cm−2 at 77 K and 7×104 A cm−2 at 4.2 K in self-field. A 12-m-long tape was used to construct superconducting solenoids (50, 28, and 14 mm internal diameters) generating dc fields 380–1070 G at 4.2 K. Measurements of the variation ofJ c with field (0–1.6 T) and bend strain (0–5%) are used to explain the performance of the solenoids. The critical bend strain of tapes was about 1.5%.

Notes: Abstract True zero-field critical current densityJ c of a well-characterized BPSCCO/Ag tape has been determined by means of high-resolution ac susceptibility in the temperature range 77–110 K. The resultant values (30,000 A/cm2 at 77 K) agree well with the transportJ c of the same tape. Because of a very thin BPSCCO, the coreJ c determined from the imaginary part of the ac susceptibility is nearly the same as the zero field one. AllJ c 's follow the same (1-T/T c )n withn=1.45 dependence.J c shows an approximateH −0.5 field dependence over the explored temperature range. Accordingly, the variations ofJ c withT andH seem to be determined by the flux creep.
