Notizen: Summary 1. The spatial organization of the efferent projections of CA1 and CA3 hippocampal pyramids has been studied using recordings of fibre volleys, orthodromic and antidromic population spikes and synaptic field potentials, following microelectrode stimulation of the fimbria, CA1 alveus, or subiculum. 2. Only CA3 pyramidal cells were found to send their axons into the fimbria. In the septal two thirds of the hippocampus the CA1 pyramidal cells project in a caudal direction to the pyramidal part of the subiculum. The temporal third was not explored for technical reasons. 3. Fimbrial fibres are arranged in a strictly parallel fashion, the rostro-medial CA3 cells distributing their axons near to the hippocampus, while those located at the temporal extreme distribute their axons to the outer edge of the fimbria. The organization of the Schaffer collaterals and the projections of the CA1 cells consisted of parallel lamellae, oriented nearly transversely to the longitudinal axis of the hippocampus in rabbits (more obliquely in cats). The findings indicate that CA3 cell discharge via the Schaffer collaterals represents a major input driving the CA1 cells. 4. The dichotomy with regard to hippocampal output suggests that the CA3 and CA1 regions of the hippocampus may subserve different functions, thus probably participating differentially in various behavioural situations. 5. This organization makes it possible to study the behaviour of animals with selective and regional de-efferentation of the CA3 or of the CA1 regions by making discrete lesions in the fimbria and alveus, respectively. Alternatively, recording the fibre volley from the fimbria may provide a useful monitor of the output of the CA3 region during different behaviours.

Notizen: Abstract. The second European Remote Sensing satellite ERS-2, launched in 1995, is supported by satellite laser ranging (SLR), the German precise range and range-rate equipment (PRARE) microwave tracking system, and radar altimetry (RA). SLR, PRARE and crossover RA observations (XO/RA) from May, June, and July 1996 have been analyzed using the GEOSAT software developed at Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt (FFI, The Norwegian defence research establishment). Orbits computed with the JGM3 gravity model and the more recent EGM96 gravity model have been compared with orbits from other analysis centers. Based on these comparisons in addition to the post-fit observation residuals, and results from internal orbital overlaps, we conclude that the radial component of the ERS-2 orbit can be determined with a precision of 6 cm.

Notizen: The effect of magnesium and phosphate limitation on the molecular weight distribution of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) in Alcaligens europhus in cotinuons culture has been stuied. Conditions of nitrogen limitation both with glucose excess (above ca. 20 g/L) and without excess were investigated Under N-limitation and glucose excess, Mw decreases when the magnesium content is decreased below 50% (19.7 mg/L) of the basal medium content; this also results in a broadenng of molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) from 2 to 5 and a decrease in Mw fron 2 × 106 to 0.9 × 106. Below 20% of the basal content of magnesium (7.9 mg/L) these two trends were reversed. This behaviour was not observed in the absence of glucose excess, phshate had virtually no effect on PHB Mw or its distribution, whereas wih no (or little) glucose excess Mw of the PHB decreased with phosphate concentrations below 50% of the basal level (0.705 g/L). Hence, in continuous or fed-batch cultures, in addition to nitrogen limitation to alklow for PHB accumulation, it is necesary to control both the addition of glucose (no excess) and also to maintain magnesium limitation (ca. 25% of basal medium level, 9.9 mg/L) and phosphate above 50% of he basal level (0.705 g/L). Thus, when broadening of molecular weight destribution (increase in Mw/Mn) is observed at the end of fed-batch culture it is probably caused by phosphate limitation and/or glucose excess. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
