Notes: Abstract The v2 + v3 combination band of water has been recorded for nine alcohol-water solutions in which the volume fraction of water is less than 2% and for three alcohol-water solutions over the entire range of composition. In dilute solutions it was found that the fraction of “symmetrically” bonded water was, in general, smaller than in aprotic solvent-water systems. The fraction of nonbonded water protons was greater in alcohols of higher molecular weight and was also greater in tertiary alcohols than in primary ones. The 2vOH overtone band was recorded for three alcohols in alcohol-rich solutions. Water appears to break up the polymeric alcohol structure, and there appears to be a slight preference for water-water bonds over water-alcohol bonding. Raman spectra of the alcohol C−O stretching mode indicate that water-alcohol bonding is stronger than alcohol-alcohol bonding. The fraction of free alcohol and water OH groups appears to be smaller in solutions of intermediate composition than in the pure liquids. This increased “structure” of the solutions is consistent with the maxima occurring in the viscosity of alcohol-water solutions.

Notes: Abstract Cyclical bifurcated hydrogen bonded structures are proposed for aqueous solutions of hydrofluoric acid and for the bifluoride ion which are consistent with the spectral data. The structure proposed for HF is also applicable to solutions in organic solvents. Raman spectra of tetramethylguanidinium perchlorate suggest that the corresponding Raman spectra of perchloric acid solutions may not be interpreted in terms of a completely dissociated acid. Other evidence including activity coefficient, heat capacity and partial molal volume data suggest that there is some association in relatively dilute perchloric acid solutions between the perchlorate ion and the hydrated proton. This association decreases in concentrated aqueous solutions.

Notes: Abstract Osmotic and activity coefficients are reported for the aqueous solution of perrhenic acid and for its lithium, sodium and tetramethylguanidinium slats at 25°C. These coefficients are similar in order of magnitude but smaller than the coefficients of the corresponding perchorates. Evidence is submitted for the ion pairing of the perrhenate ion with both hydronium and tetramethylguanidinium ions in fairly dilute aqueous solutions. The association with hydronium ion decreases in more concentrated solutions.

Notes: Abstract Osmotic coefficients for methanol solutions of sodium iodide are calculated from recently published vapor pressure data. These data furnish a reference solute for other isopiestic studies in this solvent. Data are reported for three additional electrolytes and two non-electrolytes. These data are compared with the osmotic coefficients of the same solutes in water to illustrate and in some instances to elucidate the relative importance of various interactions in solutions.
