Unfallursachen: penetrierende, iatrogene, stumpfe Verletzungen, Verkehrsunfälle. Therapie: primär 40 Ligaturen, 9 Amputationen, 19 mal konservative Behandlung. 246 Arterien warden rekonstruiert. Ergebnis: 183 Rekonstruktionen zeigen gute, 18 eingeschränkte Funktion, 24 Patienten warden amputiert, 31 starben. — 28 Ligaturen zeigen gute Funktion, 5 schlechte Funktion, 6 Patienten warden amputiert, 1 starb. — Die konservativ Behandelten zeigen 9 mal gute, 5 mal eingeschränkte Funktion, 1 Amputation und 3 mal letalen Ausgang.
Notes: Summary The report deals with 314 vascular operations after accidents, 35 of which involved aortic injury. Etiology: penetrating, iatrogennc, traumatic, following traffic accidents. Treatment: primary ligations in 40, amputation in 9, conservative treatment in 19 patients. Arterial reconstruction was performed in 246 cases. Results: 183 reconstructions resulted in good, 18 in limited function, 24 patients needed amputation, and 31 died. Twenty-eight ligations left good and 5 bad function, 6 patients needed amputation, and 1 died. Of the conservatively treated patients, 9 had good, and 5 had limited function, 1 required amputation, and 3 died.

Notes: Summary Ethanol at a dosage of 3 g/kg reduced body weight was injected i.v. into mongrel dogs resulting in a blood alcohol concentration of approximately 2.9 mg/ml. One hour after injection the dogs were anaesthetized with halothane-N2O/O2 and blood was withdrawn until the blood pressure was reduced to 40 mm Hg. This usually required removal of about 30 – 40 % of the total blood volume. The resulting haemorrhagic shock was ascertained by monitoring blood pH, pCO2, pO2, lactate, pyruvate and blood electrolytes. A blood specimen for enzymatic alcohol determination (ADH) was obtained every 30 min over a period of 3 hours. Compared with equally dosed controls the dogs in haemorrhagic shock showed a significant (p = 0.005) reduction of the blood alcohol decay rate (β) which is explained by 1) the diminished blood flow through the liver and 2) the hypoxaemic metabolic situation in shock.

Notes: Abstract Pure autonomic failure (PAF; also known as idiopathic orthostatic hypotension or Bradbury-Eggleston syndrome) is an uncommon sporadic disorder, characterized by autonomic failure without other neurological deficits and histopathologically by cell loss in intermediolateral columns and sympathetic ganglia. Few postmortem studies of patients with PAF have been reported in the literature, and none have demonstrated Lewy bodies in distal axons, although this has been described as a feature in Parkinson’s disease with autonomic failure. We report a patient with PAF who had orthostatic hypotension and urinary symptoms for 15 years prior to death at the age of 63 years. Postmortem findings included typical and atypical Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra, locus ceruleus, substantia innominata, and sympathetic ganglia, as well as in autonomic axons in the epicardial fat, autonomic nerve fascicles in periadrenal adipose tissue, and autonomic nerves in the muscularis of the urinary bladder. Sites of autonomic nerve involvement correlated with clinical symptomatology, and thus were a valuable observation in the complete autopsy. Systemic autopsy results should be reviewed carefully in patients with PAF, as Lewy bodies in this disease may be seen in distal axons at a great length from their primary cell bodies.

Description / Table of Contents: Light turbocharger compressor wheels from aluminium and magnesium investment castingWithin the scope of a team work between Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch AG, Volkswagen AG, Sterling International Technologies Ltd. and the Fraunhofer Institute for Strength of Structures under Operational Conditions LBF compressor wheels of aluminium and magnesium investment casting were developed and tested. Strength and fatigue tests, overspeed and field tests as well as metallographic checks were made in addition to the finite element calculations to optimize the stress under centrifugal force in an appropriate way for the materials involved. The results and the knowledge gathered are to clarify whether magnesium alloys are an appropriate replacement for the proven standard aluminium alloy for turbochargers.

Notes: The particle scattering factor P(ϑ) with Gaussian statistics for polydispersed systems has been treated. For a polystyrene sample with a sharp molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn 〈 1.02, Mw = 1.5 X 106), the measured angular dependence of scattered intensity indicates that the polymer coil does obey Gaussian statistics. This holds for a range of concentrations provided the variation of the constant representing the radius of gyration with concentration is adjusted.
