Notes: As a result of the development of very sensitive equipment, it is now possible to show that the chemiluminescence of organic compounds in solution is quite a common phenomenon. Notable advances have been made during recent years in the investigation of the chemiluminescence of substituted phthalic acid hydrazides and related compounds. A new and probably generally applicable method of producing chemiluminescence has recently been discovered in the reaction of aromatic free-radical anions with appropriate free-radical cations.

Notes: Thioether groups participate in nucleophilic substitution reactions at adjacent carbon atoms, in the addition of alkane and arenesulfenyl halides onto olefinic double bonds, and in elimination reactions which lead to olefins and which proceed via intermediate episulfonium ions. Studies of alkylthioacrylic acid derivatives, which are readily synthetized because of the neighboring group effect, show that the presence of thioether groups in the α-position of acrylic acid systems leads to particularly high reactivity in “head-to-head” dimerizations.
