Notes: Abstract A 10-year-old patient has been followed for 10 years after repair of an aortic-left ventricular tunnel (ALVT) for residual aortic regurgitation and significant recurrent leak through the ALVT. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was done prior to surgery and intraoperatively to (1) clarify the precise anatomy of the ALVT, (2) evaluate the degree of aortic regurgitation, and (3) assess the repair. Delineation of the anatomy of the ALVT and assessment of the residual aortic insufficiency helped with the intraoperative decisionmaking. We describe the TEE findings of a residual ALVT in this patient and discuss the role of TEE in managing the lesion.

Notes: Experiments were performed to study the variation upon storage at room temperature of both the bound rubber and the rheological properties of filled rubber compounds, prepared either with high cis-1,4 polybutadiene or with natural rubber and various levels of a reinforcing carbon black. It was found that the bound rubber and the rheological properties vary upon storage according to a two-stage model. Depending on the chemical nature of the rubber, several hundred hours storage are necessary before constant properties are measured. These variations are related to changes occuring in the rubber-black morphology of the compounds. Large strain rheological tests are most sensitive to storage maturation which suggests an explanation for well-known hardening effects observed on the factory floor. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: This work describes a method developed to study the permeation of fluids through rubber membrane in a semiautomatic manner, in such a way that information regarding the complete process is obtained. Using this technique, several permeation parameters were assessed with fluoroelastomer and hydrogenated nitrile rubber membranes. A phenomenological model for the permeation process is proposed that includes two concomitant physical phenomena: the swelling of the membrane and the permeation itself. Simple mathematical relationships are derived from the experimental data, with the permeation rate as the key parameter.
