Notizen: Abstract Eighteen non-anxious volunteers underwent sleep recordings and daytime tests of sleepiness, performance, and mood while receiving, either alprazolam 0.5 mg b.i.d. or diazepam 5 mg b.i.d. for 7 consecutive days. Recordings and tests were done before treatment and on the 1st and 7th days of treatment. Nocturnal sleep changes were similar for both groups; there were no statistically significant changes in mood. However, levels of daytime sleepiness differed. Alprazolam subjects showed more daytime sedation than diazepam subjects on treatment day 1, but showed a significant decreased in Day 1–7 daytime sedation. Although diazepam subjects were less sedated at the onset, they showed no tolerance to this effect; thus by treatment day 7, the two groups did not differ in levels of daytime sleepiness. Results suggested that tolerance to alprazolam's sedative effects (which develops during the 1st week of treatment) may be separable from tolerance to its antianxiety effects (which develops after at least 4 weeks). As daytime sedation is common and potentially dangerous with most anxiolytics, selective tolerance to this side effect is highly desirable.

Notizen: Low to moderate molecular weight terpene-anhydride resins were synthesized and evaluated in coatings applications. The terpenes used were terepinolene, β-pinene, and alloocimene. The comononmers used were maleic or itaconic anhydride. The terpene-anhydride resins were used to formulate solvent-borne coatings with an epoxy or diol as a coreactant. The coatings were evaluated as films over aluminum or steel panels. When a diol was used as a coreactant, the film properties were relatively poor. When epoxy was used as a coreactant, the properties of the films were much improved in terms of resistance to solvent and hardness. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: We have investigated the possibility of replacing hydraulic oils with aqueous polymer solutions having the same rheological properties. We measured the low and high shear rate viscosities of polymer solutions at several moderate concentrations and compared the results to the predictions of a molecular model. We found that viscosities measured at shear rates near 1 million reciprocal seconds are in good agreement with those calculated using the model of Mochimaru.6 Shear degradation studies were also conducted using higher molecular weight versions of some of the polymers. Exposure of these to very high shear rate caused a permanent decrease in viscosity and a corresponding change in the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Taken together, these results show that very low molecular weight polymers at moderate concentrations are necessary to formulate an aqueous hydraulic fluid with approximately Newtonian behavior at shear rates near 1 million reciprocal seconds, and without long-term polymer degradation.

Notizen: Cerium-rich conversion coatings have been deposited onto aluminium 2024-T351 alloy by immersion into a solution containing 10 g L-1 CeCl3 and 1% H2O2 in a process described as ‘cerating’. Prior to deposition the alloy had been prepared either by using a standard chemical pretreatment used for aerospace alloys before conversion coating or by polishing. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy have been used to characterize these cerium-containing conversion coatings. It was found that, during deposition, hydrated cerium oxide initially covered the intermetallics present in the alloy surface and then covered the surface generally. Deposition continued over the intermetallics throughout the conversion coating process, resulting in thick, heavily-cracked regions considerably greater than the average thickness of the film (〉0.3 μm). Elsewhere the coating was generally up to 0.2 μm thick, and appeared to comprised of deposited particles around 100 nm in size.
