    Notes: A projection operator procedure is used to analyze the particle currents and the fluxes of momentum and energy in a multicomponent classical fluid. The projection is onto the fluctuations from equilibrium of the temperature, of the concentrations of all species present in the solution, and of the total density of momentum. Each of the flow rates is resolved into a sum of convective, dissipative, and random parts. Correlation function expressions are derived for the wave vector and frequency-dependent Onsager kinetic coefficients appropriate to the laboratory frame of reference and to several flow reference frames as well. Special attention is devoted to the frame associated with the mass-averaged, barycentric velocity and connections are considered between the results of the present investigation and those obtained in an earlier, closely related study which used a projection onto a subspace of that used here.

    Notes: The present study introduces a new scanning capillary tube viscometer for measuring fluid viscosity continuously over a range of shear rates including a low shear regime. Using a charge-coupled device sensor array, one could measure the changes in fluid level in a rising tube h(t) from which viscosity and shear rate were mathematically calculated. The concept of the new scanning capillary tube viscometer was validated by measuring viscosities of Newtonian fluids and comparing the results with those obtained with reference data and a rotating viscometer. Furthermore, the present method overcomes one of the major drawbacks of the capillary tube viscometer, the inability to produce viscosity data in a low shear range, by extending the shear rate range as low as 5 s−1 for water and diluted glycerin solutions at room temperature. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In the regenerating urodele limb, catheptic activity has been known to be present in the stump tissue undergoing histolysis, and it has been implicated in the modification of some intracellular and extracellular matrix molecules. In this study, we compared spatial and temporal gene expression profiles of cathepsin D in normal, retinoic acid-treated, or denervated larval limb regenerates of Hynobius leechii and compared cathepsin D activities between normal and retinoic acid-treated limb regenerates. The results showed that the expression of cathepsin D increased markedly in the vicinity of an amputation site under the wound epidermis at dedifferentiation stage, whereas the expression level of cathepsin D was low in the denervated limb. With retinoic acid treatment, the expression of cathepsin D was elevated in terms of both level and duration. In addition, the profile of cathepsin D activity coincided well with the expression profile of cathepsin D in normal and retinoic acid-treated limb regenerates. These results suggest that the increase of cathepsin D activity during the dedifferentiation period is due to the upregulation of cathepsin D transcription, and nerve factors are involved in this process. Furthermore, retinoic acid appears to upregulate cathepsin D expression, which might be linked to the enhanced dedifferentiation in the retinoic acid-treated limb regenerates.

    Notes: Abstract: Previously we reported that immunostimulated astrocytes were highly vulnerable to glucose deprivation. The augmented death was mimicked by the peroxynitrite (ONOO--producing reagent 3-morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1). Here we show that glucose deprivation and ONOO- synergistically deplete intracellular reduced glutathione (GSH) and augment the death of astrocytes via formation of cyclosporin A-sensitive mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) pore. Astrocytic GSH levels were only slightly decreased by glucose deprivation or SIN-1 (200 μM) alone. In contrast, a rapid and large depletion of GSH was observed in glucose-deprived/SIN-1-treated astrocytes. The depletion of GSH occurred before a significant release of lactate dehydrogenase (a marker of cell death). Superoxide dismutase and ONOO- scavengers completely blocked the augmented death, indicating that the reaction of nitric oxide with superoxide to form ONOO- was implicated. Furthermore, nitrotyrosine immunoreactivity (a marker of ONOO-) was markedly enhanced in glucose-deprived/SIN-1-treated astrocytes. Mitochondrial transmembrane potential (MTP) was synergistically decreased in glucose-deprived/SIN-1-treated astrocytes. The glutathione synthase inhibitor L-buthionine-(S,R)-sulfoximine markedly decreased the MTP and increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) releases in SIN-1-treated astrocytes. Cyclosporin A, an MPT pore blocker, completely prevented the MTP depolarization as well as the enhanced LDH releases in glucose-deprived/SIN-1-treated astrocytes.

    Notes: Changes in structural and magnetic properties during mechanical alloying and heat treatment were studied in Cu0.8(Fe1−xCox)0.2 (x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6) alloys using x-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, and magnetometry. Supersaturated solid solutions with a fcc crystal structure were obtained in all alloys by mechanical alloying. The grain sizes of the solid solutions were about 20 nm. Magnetization of the supersaturated solid solutions could be explained by a mixture of two types of particles showing paramagnetism and ferromagnetism. The variation in magnetization with Co content in the solutions was similar to the Slater–Pauling curve. Fe–Co with a bcc structure precipitates during annealing of the Cu0.8Fe0.1Co0.1 alloy. With increasing annealing temperature ferromagnetic behavior becomes dominant due to a coarsening of the precipitates. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In the gauge-invariant formulation of the minimal chiral Schwinger model, we explicitly show the role of the Wess–Zumino field, which seems to be dynamical in the matter gauge φL=0.     Notes: Abstract: This paper proposes a fuzzy post adjustment (FPA) mechanism so that human knowledge and machine knowledge can be integrated more synergistically to improve the performance of expert systems. Machine knowledge means knowledge algorithmically derived from past instances. Human knowledge implies (1) expert knowledge judging the trends of external factors and (2) user knowledge representing users’personal views about information given by both expert knowledge and machine knowledge. We consider an expert system that uses the FPA mechanism to incorporate the effect of external factors effectively into its inference process. The goal of this expert system is stock market timing prediction, which is divided into four kinds: bull, edged-up, edged-down and bear. Empirical tests showed that the proposed FPA mechanism can improve the performance of an expert system significantly, even in a turbulent decision-making environment.
