    Notes: Abstract Effects of pooled ganglionic extract on the urea and uric acid levels from blood, hepatopancreas, mantle and kidney of the pulmonate L. acuminata have been analysed. Blood urea and mantle uric acid were significantly (P〈0.005 and P〈0.05 respectively) increased following injection with pleuroparietalpedal-visceral (PPPV Complex) ganglia homogenate within 2 hrs. On the contrary hepatopancreas urea and kidney uric acid levels were significantly (P〈0.00) lowered. Cerebral ganglia homogenate and boiled extract of PPPV complex did not provoke any significant change in urea and uric acid levels. It is advocated that (a) neurohormone(s) which is (are) heat-labile and originate from the PPPV complex, influence(s) the nitrogen end-products in these snails.

    Notes: Abstract Effect of ganglionic extirpations and replacement on the ammonia levels in the blood and various tissues of the marine pulmonate, O. verruculatum was studied. Three hrs after extirpation of the pleurovisceral (PV) complex only and not any other ganglia, revealed a significant (P 〈 0.001) decline in the blood and foot ammonia levels and significant (P 〈 0.001) increment in the hepatopancreatic ammonia level. However, no change was observed in the mantle and nephridial ammonia levels. Replacement of the PV complex, either via implantation of intact ganglia or boiled and unboiled homogenate administration (1 gn/animal) into the ganglionectomised group, restored ammonia levels in the blood and foot and showed significant (P 〈 0.005) decrease in hepatopancreatic ammonia levels. The results are discussed in the light of hormonal regulation of the nitrogen metabolism.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of urea injections on the cytomorphology of neurosecretory cells of the snail L. acuminata has been examined. Of the three types of neurosecretory cells (A, B and C) the changes were evident only in C cells from the parietal ganglia. 3 hr after 0.1 ml of 1 M urea plus 0.1 ml of I M glucose injection, the appearance of neurosecretory material (NSM) in the neurohaemal area without any change in C cell C : N (Cytoplasm: nuclear) ratio, was evident, whereas daily injection of urea plus glucose for three consecutive days induced a significant (P = 0.005) increment in C cell nuclear diameter and C : N value over equiosmole control (glucose) injections. This was accompanied by about 50% depletion of perikarya NSM intensity and the neurohaemal area was completely destitute of the NSM. The significance of the data is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract O. verruculatum shows aggregated spatial dispersion during the pre-reproductive and reproductive period, which appears to be closely related with propagative requirements. Analysis of the stomach contents and laboratory observations indicate that O. verruculatum feeds on marine sea weeds (Padina and Ulva).
