    Notes: Abstract Chamaecytisus proliferus (L.fil.) Link (Fabaceae: Genisteae) represents a species complex in the Canary Islands. Floristic data from 147 releves from the whole complex were collected and analysed by classification (TWINSPAN) and ordination (DECORANA) methods. Results indicate that white escobon of Tenerife, escobon of El Hierro, white escobon of Gran Canaria and typical tagasaste in La Palma are associated with those plant communities from the north of these islands which are under the influence of the north-eastern trade winds. Narrow-leaved escobon in Tenerife and La Gomera, escobon of southern Gran Canaria and white tagasaste of La Palma are found in those areas which are not under the direct influence of these winds. Morphological forms from the more easterly islands (Gran Canaria and Tenerife-La Gomera) have the broadest ecological range and they have played an important role in the floristic changes which have taken place after the destruction of the forests in these islands. The highest priorities for in situ conservation should be given to wild populations of typical tagasaste, white escobon of Tenerife and escobon of El Hierro.

    Notes: Abstract Germplasm from one or more populations of each taxon of the Macaronesian endemic genus Argyranthemum Sch. Bip. (Asteraceae: Anthemideae) was collected in the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Selvagens Islands and the Desertas Islands. A total of 253 germplasm samples was collected and they are conserved ex situ at the seed bank of Centro de Investigación y Tecnología Agraria de Canarias (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain). Duplicates are held at the germplasm bank of Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Agrónomos (Madrid, Spain). A preliminary account of the ecogeography of the genus based on field observation is provided. In situ conservation strategies are discussed, particularly with regard to the occurrence of hybridization within Argyranthemum.

    Notes: In this article, we present a study of the localization and properties of the molecular orbitals (MOs) of polyatomic systems by using a comprehensive version of the G1 model. In this version, the wave function is written as a DODS product of univocally determined spin orbitals (MOs), “projected” on the singlet ground state. A procedure for determining the MOs is given and applied to the BeH2 ground state. Equivalent split shell and localized MOs are found. The Be orbitals are seen to exhibit sp hybridization and the localized valence MOs are found to produce - 13.7 kcal/mol localization energy. Multistructural calculations are carried out and show that the present approach is able to describe localized and well-oriented bonds whenever the molecule under study presents only a single well-defined nonresonant chemical structure. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
