    Notes: Abstract A supersensitive polymerase chain reaction procedure was developed to detect human T-lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II) proviral genome. Six primer pairs covering the various regions of HTLV-II were compared and selected on the basis of specificity and sensitivity. Among them, one primer pair of the pol region of HTLV-II (II pol) was able to amplify and detect even 0.1 fg of the cloned plasmid HTLV-II DNA (seven copies) by regular ethidium bromide staining on polyacrylamide gel. By using this procedure, we screened 189 HTLV-I seropositive blood donors from Yamaguchi and Fukuoka Red Cross Blood Centers, Japan. There were four positive samples detectable with the HTLV-II-specific pol primer pair, as well as with the HTLV-I tax primer pair. The amplified DNAs of two specimens were cloned and sequenced. The sequences of the HTLV-I tax region from both specimens were identical to that of HTLV-I. On the other hand, those of the HTLV-II pol region were identical to that of HTLV-II, except for one base substitution in a clone from one subject. These results indicate that dual infection of HTLV-I and HTLV-II in the same persons occurs among Japanese blood donors.

    Notes: Abstract We report the case of a Japanese girl with a severe type of Moebius syndrome. Her morphological features were a mask-like face, limitation of horizontal eye movements, severe bulbar palsy, multiple and bilateral arthrogryposis including the elbow, knee, and ankle joints, and clubfeet. After birth, her general condition became worse because of repeated apneic spells and aspiration pneumonias due to dysphagia. She finally required tracheotomy. Computed tomography (CT) of the brain revealed minute calcifications on the fourth ventricle floor; this may have been due to severe damage to the brain stem. It is most likely that the various manifestations in our patient were due to disturbance of the blood supply to arteries perfusing the brain stem and to some other arteries, at a critical stage of fetal development.

    Notes: The Raman spectrum of tryptophan has been observed in its neutral aqueous solution with 514.5, 488.0, 457.9, 363.8, and 257.3 nm excitation. The effects of N-deuteration and 15N-substitution of the indole ring on the Raman spectrum have been examined. A preliminary normal coordinate treatment of the indole ring has also been made. On the basis of these data, the vibrational mode and a possible origin of the Raman scattering intensity has been discussed for each of the 1623, 1555, 1436, 1344, 1016, 882, and 762 cm-1 Raman lines of tryptophan. The resonance enhanced line at 1623 cm-1 has been assigned to a vibration of the indole ring which is related to the b3g ring stretching vibration of naphthalene at 1636 cm-1. Its intensity is considered to come almost solely from the B̃ ← X̃ (La) electronic transition at 273 nm. It is therefore probable that the geometrical structure of the molecule is distorted along this vibrational coordinate on going from the ground (X̃) to the B̃ electronic excited state.
