Notes: Abstract Daily plankton collections were taken from a billabong of the River Murray for two weeks prior to inundation in March 1990, and continued for ten days after flooding. Quantitative responses of the plankton community and the component species were analysed against measured environmental variables and between species. Rotifers and copepod nauplii were the predominant net plankton (〉 53 µm). Significant negative or positive responses to inundation were detected for most common taxa of 63 rotifer species recorded. A four-fold dilution from intrusion of river water masked rapid population increases. Opportunistic responses to inundation appear to be a survival strategy in the highly unpredictable billabong environment.

Notes: Abstract Morphological comparisons of populations of Filinia from New Zealand and Australia established the presence of an undescribed species in Lake Okaro, N.Z. Filinia novaezealandiae n. sp. is described. SEM micrographs of trophi were used to distinguish closely allied Filinia species. Filinia grandis comb. nov. is redescribed from Australia on the basis of trophi differences from F. pejleri. It is suggested that Filinia species may be more restricted than global records indicate; these records reflect the distribution of authoritative taxonomic references, not necessarily the animals they depict.

Notes: Using a pharmacokinetic model recently proposed to explain ibuprofen disposition in man,1 plasma concentrations of pure ibuprofen enantiomers were simulated following oral administration of (-)-(R)-ibuprofen, (+)-(S)-ibuprofen, or rac-ibuprofen. Simulated and literature values for AUC's were used to compare S/R ratios for different cases of the model and for different methods of calculating the fraction of R bioinverted to S. Numerical simulation using STELLA confirmed previous results for different cases of bioinversion. Simulated S/R AUC ratios, for administration of the racemate, ranged from 4.0 (presystemic bioinversion) to 1.66 (systemic bioinversion). Literature values for S/R AUC ratios averaged 1.53±0.2 for administration of the racemate; therefore, systemic bioinversion was concluded to be representative of ibuprofen disposition. Additional simulations of S/R AUC ratios, for administration of (-)-(R)-ibuprofen only, ranged from 1.5 (presystemic bioinversion) to 0.66 (systemic bioinversion). Literature values for S/R AUC ratios averaged 0.50±0.9 for administration of (-)-(R)-ibuprofen only, which again supported conclusions of systemic bioinversion. Using different equations for estimation of fraction of R inverted to S (FR→S), results based on simulated data were identical; however, FR→S values based on literature data were different. Therefore, assumptions made for different FR→S equations do not appear to be rigorous. Calculations of FR→S, based on literature data, averaged 0.52 overall, indicating bioavailability of (+)-(S)-ibuprofen may be similar for a 150 mg dose of (+)-(S)-ibuprofen compared to a 200 mg dose of racemate.

Notes: Rates of flow of pure gases, both those with no adsorption and those with appreciable adsorption, were studied as a function of pressure level, pressure drop, and temperature for flow through 1/2-in.-diameter cylindrical plugs of activated carbon and of unsintered Vycor glass. Adsorption isotherms for the pure gases on Vycor glass were measured over the range of variables covered in the flow studies. A few measurements were made for bulk liquid flowing through a Vycor plug.Permeabilities, which are proportional to the rate of flow per unit of pressure drop, were satisfactorily correlated for hydrogen, helium, argon, and nitrogen by employing existing gas-phase flow theory. Permeabilities considerably larger than the values predicted from the nonadsorbed gas correlation, sometimes more than seventeen times as large, were observed for ethylene, propylene, and isobutane flowing through a Vycor plug. For the hydrocarbon-Vycor systems, permeabilities for vapor flow are as much as sixty times larger than for bulk liquid flow. The unusual flow phenomena for the hydrocarbon-Vycor systems are attributed to a rapid transport in the adsorbed layer. The total transport is treated as being the sum of gas-phase and adsorbed-layer flow. An equation describing adsorbed-layer movement is derived by utilizing a force balance together with thermodynamic principles. The resulting equation has just one empirical constant, and its use requires adsorption-isotherm data. It correlates very well the surface flow rates for the major range of the variables covered in this investigation. Rate measurements were made for adsorbed-layer concentrations ranging from about one tenth of a monolayer up through the capillary condensation region. Deviations in the one constant form of the equation are observed below one tenth of a monolayer. The available literature data on flow in adsorbed layers are reasonably well correlated by the same equation.

Notes: It is well known that orientation can produce, at a minimum, an order of magnitude improvement in physical properties of low cost plastic resins. A unique, large-scale, commercial rolling mill process for continuous orientation of plastic sheet has been developed, A number of oriented materials have been commercially produced by this rolling mill process with a wide variety of physical properties attained. This has resulted in large volume sales of many interesting commercial products. Over the last thirty years, numerous researchers have conducted studies to evaluate the theoretical aspects of the rolling process, and the resultant properties. Most commercial oriented products are of relatively small cross sectional size such as fibers and film. The process reported herein produces heavy cross section oriented sheet. A new class of high strength thermoplastic materials is now available for design engineers to use. Long-term strength properties are often 10 to 100 times better than with unoriented thermoplastics.

Notes: The secretion of the skin glands of the ‘orange-thighed frog’ Litoria xanthomera contains seven peptides. One of these is the known hypotensive peptide caerulein. Two new peptides, caerin 1.6 [GLFSVLGAVAKHVLPHVVPVIAEKL(NH2)], and caerin 1.7 [GLFKVLGSVAKHLLPHVAPVIAEKL(NH2)] show antibacterial properties. Two other peptides lack the first two amino acid residues of caerins 1.6 and 1.7 and show no antibacterial activity. The identification of the peptides in Litoria xanthomera confirms that this species is related to Litoria caerula, Litoria gilleni and Litoria splendida but not as closely as those three species are related to each other. © 1997 European Peptide Society and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The collisional activation mass spectra of the [M - H]- ions of dipeptides containing Met or Cys show the usual backbone fragmentation allowing the sequence of the peptide to be determined. A methionine residue may be identified by the presence of a pronounced peak resulting from loss of MeSH, while a cysteine residue may be identified by the presence of a peak corresponding to loss of either H2S or (H2S + CO2).

Notes: Phenylthiohydantoin (PTH) amino acid derivatives are formed during sequential Edman degradation of peptides and proteins. Isomeric Leu and Ile (which differ only in respectively having iso-butyl and sec-butyl chains, and are often difficult to distinguish by conventional mass spectrometric techniques) may be readily identified by the characteristic decompositions of the [M — H]- ions of their PTH derivatives. The Leu spectrum shows major loss of propane, while that of the Ile derivative shows elimination of both methane and ethane. This method may be used routinely with 10 μg quantities of peptide material.

Notes: The structures of underivatized di- and tripeptides may be determined from a consideration of the collision-induced dissociations of their [M - H]- ions. There are three types of fragmentation, viz. (i) the backbone cleavage which provides sequencing information, (ii) α side-chain cleavage irrespective of the position of the amino acid residue, and (iii) cleavages which are characteristic of amino acid residues in specific positions, in particular the N- or C-terminal positions.

Notes: The [M — H]- ions derived from tetrapeptides generally show two different collision-induced backbone cleavages which allow the determination of the amino acid sequence of the peptide. The first of these involves the formation of the carboxylate anions of either constituent amino acids or fragment peptides. In the second, amino acids or fragment peptides are eliminated as neutrals. There are a number of residues which undergo characteristic sidechain fragmentations irrespective of their position in the tetrapeptide, e.g. Ser, Thr, Cys, Met, Phe and Tyr. However, there are also some residues which, when situated at the C-terminal end of the peptide, promote pronounced fragmentation at the C-terminal position which occurs to the exclusion of the normal backbone cleavages. We conclude that the data obtained from these negative-ion cleavages are analytically useful, and complement those provided by the cognate positive-ion technique.
