Notes: Summary Fifty urine samples from a variety of urological patients were analysed using the fluorochrome acridine orange in an automated system. The results were compared with standard colony counts. The method has a potential value in the detection of significant infection particularly in population studies.

Notes: Summary After initial evaluation of a manual fluorescence microscopy system on a variety of urines the method was automated and subsequently tested in a population survey of urinary tract infection in schoolgirls. This automated Bactoscan system allowed a rapid analysis of urine samples and with the introduction of modifications to the staining protocol it correctly eliminated 91% of samples as being not significantly infected.

Notes: Summary The prevalence of urinary tract infection in a modern Scottish town has been ascertained in female school children aged 5–12. In 2,234 girls the initial prevalence of urinary tract infection is 3.3%. In addition to the information on urinary tract infection the social and personal history was available including data on incontinence, enuresis and current antibiotic therapy. The necessity to have a system available which allows a cheap and rapid assessment of population surveys is made.

Notes: A specimen of linear polyethylene was subjected to isothermal secondary crystallization at a series of temperatures below the primary isothermal crystallization temperature, the melting and primary crystallization stages being held constant throughout the investigation. Dilatometric measurements exhibit an S-character at low values of undercooling Tp - Ts, where Tp and Ts are, respectively, the primary and secondary crystallization temperatures; at larger undercoolings, however, an initial very rapid crystallization is followed by a very slow stage. When corrected for thermal contraction of the polymer, the net degree of secondary transformation is seen to peak at a temperature in the range 109-113°C. The S-character of the isotherms and the peaked temperature variation of degree of transformation lead to the conclusion that a large portion of the secondary crystallization consists of the nucleation and growth of the new crystallites. Johnson-Mehl-Avrami analysis leads to a model of heterogeneous nucleation within the remaining amorphous zones, followed by one-dimensional, diffusion-controlled growth.

Notes: Abstract A myoelectric control system is one in which the operation of a device is controlled by the electric potential produced by voluntary contraction of a muscle. These systems have been used mainly for the control of artificial limbs. Early design of the control systems was empirical, but recent work has provided some theoretical basis for predicting their performance. This should lead to improvements in existing systems and make feasible the development of more complex prostheses.

Notes: Abstract Progress in the development of a system to provide sensory feedback of the pinch force of an artificial hand is described. Design criteria relating to electrocutaneous stimulation and compatibility with myoelectric control are discussed. Details of a practical system, presently in use by two amputees prior to full-scale clinical evaluation, are presented.

Notes: An HETP equation for the capillary column is developed that takes into account the dependence of gaseous diffusion on pressure, the compressibility of the mobile phase, together with the unique relationship between mobile phase velocity, and the resistance to mass transfer in the stationary phase. The equation is used to develop a procedure for column optimization and expressions are derived that allow the optimum column radius and optimum column length to be calculated for a given fixed inlet pressure. It is shown that fast, simple separations are optimally achieved using relatively short small diameter columns. Conversely, optimum performance for the separation of complex mixtures requiring higher efficiencies requires the use of long columns with relatively large diameters.
