    Notes: Summary The effect of D-mannose and D-glucose on bacteriuria due to Escherichia coli with mannose-sensitive adhesins was investigated in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats undergoing diuresis. Inocula of 105, 107, or 108 bacteria in 0.1 ml of normal saline or 2.5% or 10% D-mannose or D-glucose were injected intravesically and urine was cultured 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 days later. The levels of bacteriuria on days 1 and 5 were significantly lower in rats inoculated with 105 E. coli and 10% D-mannose than in controls (p〈0.05 and 0.01 respectively) and the percentages of rats with 〈 100 bacteria/ml were higher on days 1 and 3 (p=0.05 and 0.02 respectively). Bacteriuria was significantly lower in rats inoculated with 107 bacteria and 10% D-mannose than in controls on days 5 and 7 (p〈0.01 for each day) and the percentage of rats with 〈100 bacteria/ml was higher on day 7 (p=0.01). D-glucose reduced bacteriuria significantly only with a concentration of 10% after instillation of 105 E. coli (p〈0.05, day 1). The results indicate that D-mannose and D-glucose can significantly reduce bacteriuria within 1 day and that their efficacy is dependent upon the concentration of both saccharide and bacteria.

    Notes: Summary Previous studies have demonstrated that after intravesical inoculation of Escherichia coli, rats drinking 5% glucose-water remained bacteriuric for up to 21 days while rats drinking tap water became abacteriuric within a few days. To facilitate accurate monitoring of bacteriuria, we created a ventral bladder hernia for percutaneous aspiration of urine. After intravesical inoculation with 108 E. coli, rats with ventral bladder hernias demonstrated clearance of bacteria at a rate comparable to that observed in rats with intrapelvic bladders (p〈0.01). Of rats drinking tap water, 6 of 7 (85%) with intrapelvic bladders and 8 of 9 (89%) with ventral hernias had less than 10 colony forming units per ml of urine within 9 days of inoculation. Of rats drinking 5% glucose-water, 4 of 5 (80%) with intrapelvic bladders and 6 of 8 (75%) with ventral bladder hernias had 〉105 colony forming units per ml of urine 9 days after inoculation. The results suggest that this technique does not alter the antibacterial response of control or polyuric rats to E. coli inoculated intravesically.

    Notes: A process for the bacterial oxidation of isobutyric acid to L(+) β-hydroxyisobutyric acid has been developed. The strain of Pseudomonas putida (ATCC 21244) used in this fermentation was isolated from local soil. The process was carried out in a 15-liter fermentor over a period of 70 hr and produced L(+) β-hydroxyisobutyric acid in conversions as high as 48%. Hydroxylation of the methyl group of isobutyric acid has special interest because it is difficult to perform chemically. The useful chemical syntheses of β-hydroxyisobutyric acid available at present do not start with isobutyric acid and are not stereospecific.

    Notes: Monocrotaline, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid of chemotherapeutic interest, was successfully extracted from the crushed seeds of Crotalaria spectabilis using supercritical carbon dioxide and ethanol mixtures. Overall solubilities of the plant material in the supercritical fluid phase were as high as 1.1 mass percent, and monocrotaline solubilities were as high as 0.07 mass percent. The solubility of monocrotaline in the presence of other plant material was smaller by 50 to 98% compared with the solubility of pure monocrotaline in the supercritical fluid. Also, it was found that the extraction of the complex plant material was time-dependent after approximately one percent of the original mass of the material had been extracted.

    Notes: In recent years air quality and atmospheric investigations have become very important topics. This results from a new legal basis for environmental protection which generates the need for the accurate measurement of ambient conditions. Despite the importance of these investigations, detailed reviews characterizing the existing analytical GC systems are scarce. The author has attempted to remedy this unsatisfactory situation by presenting a comprative review of the principal commercially available systems as well as some homemade set-ups. No single method will be optimal for all purposes. The system of choice will depend on the particular application and on the quality and composition of the sample. This review does not attempt to cover all existing systems, but some exotic or lesser known systems have also been included.
