    Notes: Abstract The cortical auditory fields of the two hemispheres are interconnected via the corpus callosum. We have investigated the topographical arrangement of auditory callosal axons in the cat. Following circumscribed biocytin injections in the primary (AI), secondary (AII), anterior (AAF) and posterior (PAF) auditory fields, labelled axons have been found in the posterior two-thirds of the corpus callosum. Callosal axons labelled by small individual cortical injections did not form a tight bundle at the callosal midsagittal plane but spread over as much as one-third of the corpus callosum. Axons originating from different auditory fields were roughly topographically ordered, reflecting to some extent the rostro-caudal position of the field of origin. Axons from AAF crossed on average more rostrally than axons from AI; the latter crossed more rostrally than axons from PAF and AIL Callosal axons originating in a discrete part of the cortex travelled first in a relatively tight bundle to the telo-diencephalic junction and then dispersed progressively. In conclusion, the cat corpus callosum does not contain a sector reserved for auditory axons, nor a strictly topographically ordered auditory pathway. This observation is of relevance to neuropsychological and neuropathological observations in man.

    Notes: Abstract NCS-1 (neuronal calcium sensor) is a recently characterized member of a highly conserved neuron-specific family of calcium-binding proteins, which also includes frequenin and recoverin. The cellular and subcellular distributions of NCS-1 in the rat nervous system were investigated using light- and electron-microscopic immunohistochemistry. NCS-1 immunoreactivity was localized to neuronal cell bodies and axons throughout the brain and spinal cord but not to glial cells. The most intense labeling was observed in myelinated axons, the axonal ramifications of the basket cell in the cerebellar cortex, and large neurons in the brainstem and pons. These same structures were also characterized by heavy labeling for neurofilament protein, as determined by double-labeling experiments. Most axon terminals were unlabeled or only lightly labeled. The most remarkable subcellular staining occurred in the perikarya where intense labeling was associated with the membranes of the trans saccules of the Golgi apparatus. The widespread distribution of NCS-1 indicates that it may be active in a variety of calcium-dependent neuronal functions, whereas the specific subcellular localization to the Golgi apparatus and neurofilament-rich structures suggests a specialized role in calcium regulated protein trafficking and cytoskeletal interactions.

    Notes: High-purity copper samples were irradiated with high-energy protons and neutrons. The concentration of transmutational elements was measured by means of the total reflection x-ray fluorescence method using synchrotron radiation. The spectra of non-irradiated samples were substracted from the spectra of the irradiated samples. By this evaluation method, the minimum detectable concentration was as low as 1.5 μg g-1 in a copper matrix.

    Notes: It was demonstrated that a total reflection x-ray fluorescence spectrometer, using monoenergetic synchrotron radiation as the primary x-ray source, is suitable to measure the concentration of transmutational elements in Cu and Fe metal matrices. In a typical irradiation of copper with 590 MeV protons or with spallation neutrons, where the damage dose is 0.4 dpa (displacement per atom), the calculated concentration of transmutational elements is Ni 25, Co 8 and Fe 8 μg g-1. The results show that the minimum detectable concentrations were lower than these values. The energy of the sychrotron radiation was set just below the K-edge energy of the matrix element, eliminating the large peak due to the matrix. As an example, in the case of a Cu (Z = 29) matrix, the minimum detectable concentration for Ni (Z = 28) was as low as 3 μg g-1. In order to check systematically the possible geometric arrangements of beam direction-reflector position-detector position, a new vacuum chamber was designed and tested. It provides all technical components for remote control of the adjustment procedure to align the reflector in total reflection geometry. Two ways of positioning the reflector in the beam, vertical to the plane of polarization and parallel to that plane, were investigated, to find the best excitation conditions and lowest limits of detection. A few pg corresponding to a concentration of ng g-1 of samples where the matrix can be easily removed as in aqueous or acidic solutions and 50 ng g-1 concentration of metals in a light matrix as in oil were found as detection limits.
