Notes: Abstract  A series of alternating phreatomagmatic ("wet") and magmatic ("dry") basaltic pyroclastic deposits forming the Crater Hill tuff ring in New Zealand contains one unit (M1) which can only be interpreted as the products of mixing of ejecta from simultaneous wet and dry explosions at different portions of a multiple vent system. The principal characteristics of M1 are (a) rapid lateral changes in the thicknesses of, and proportions in juvenile components in individual beds, and (b) wide ranges of juvenile clast densities in every sample. M1 appears to have been associated with an elongate source of highly variable and fluctuating magma : water ratios and magma discharge rates. This contrasts with the only other documented mixed (wet and dry) basaltic pyroclastic deposits where mixing from two point sources of quite different but stable character has been inferred.

Notes: An outline is given of a method for dealing with curved boundaries in finite difference calculations (relaxation or other similar techniques) where the gradient normal to the boundary is specified. Fluid flow calculations using the velocity potential are typical of such problems and the flow round a circular cylinder is computed as an example. The method makes no approximation which is not made in the usual finite difference techniques, therefore accuracy at the boundary is as good as in the remainder of the field.

Notes: The concentration of oestrone, oestradiol and progesterone in ovarian tissue have been determined directly by quant tative high resolution mass fragmentography without the necessity of extraction or purification. The changes in the levels of these steroids in the ovary throughout a 28 day period correlate well with those measured in plasma and also with those of the corresponding metabolites excreted in urine. Some benign ovarian tumours (cysts) have been shown to contain abnormally large amounts of progesterone.

Notes: The mass spectra of some new alkaloids extracted from Cissampelos ovalifolia are discussed. The compounds are shown to be tertiary bis-benzyl isoquinoline bases of an unusual type possessing a p-xylyl moiety. Some information about the relative positions of hydroxyl and methoxyl substituents in the macrocyclic ring system is also obtained.

Notes: A number of impurities have been extracted from yellow phenolphthalein by thin layer chromatography and characterized on the basis of their mass spectra. One of these by-products appears to be fluoran while the structure proposed for a second accounts for the properties ascribed to it by previous investigations. The bulk of the impurity appears to consist of condensation products of three molecules of phenol with two of phthalic anhydride.

Notes: A ‘single pass’ method of analysing silicate rocks for their major element composition has been developed using a Philips 1212 x-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Samples need only be submitted once to the spectrometer and all ten major elements (SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3T, MnO, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O and P2O5) are determined using a Cr x-ray tube and three analysing crystals, i.e. TIAP, PET and LiF220. The method has been evaluated in terms of the quality of the calibration lines for each element, the precision of replicated analyses and by the analysis of rock standards as unknown samples. The single pass method is rapid, facilitates on-line data reduction and is capable of producing high quality analytical data.

Notes: In major element rock analysis using XRF and fused samples and standards, the construction of standard calibration lines is facilitated by the accurate knowledge of the background intensities for the elements analyed. As an alternative to measuring the background ‘off peak’ or on blanks, an iterative technique is proposed. This technique is based on repeatedly incrementing the background value until the best calibration line has been found. The quality of the calibration line is evaluated in terms of the average relative and average absolute errors. Comparative data, presented for calibration lines constructed from (1) backgrounds measured from blanks and (2) backgrounds determined by iterationm, show that the iterative technique produces superior calibrations. The analytical techniques have been tested by analysing international rock standards as unknown samples.

Notes: Two-dimensional, finite-amplitude wave propagation in an inviscid, subsonic, perfect gas medium is analysed by explicit finite-difference methods. A two-step, Lax-Wendroff method and the single-step, Lax-Friedrichs method are used. A prescribed propagating velocity or pressure disturbance is applied along a single row of grid points normal to the stream direction and results in a 'forced' outflow boundary. The inflow boundary is placed far from outflow by utilizing a streamwise expanding grid and uniform inflow is imposed. Side boundaries are spatially periodic. The numerical solutions are compared with analytical small-perturbation solutions; higher-order effects arising from non-linearities are revealed by Fourier analysis. Solutions which closely approached a periodic state were obtained. The Lax-Wendroff method combined with the expanding grid is shown to be accurate and stable, the Lax-Friedrichs scheme produced highly damped solutions.
