Notes: Abstract A fire risk analysis modeling framework was developed to analyze options for fire-safe handling and storing of flammable and combustible liquids in containers. The model illustrates the application of general risk analysis modeling principles to a current, highly visible problem and introduces some new modeling elements. Risk is driven by relative success in providing a complete, operational sprinkler system adequate for controlling fires that start in ordinary combustibles, well away from the liquid products.

Notes: Abstract A general conceptual framework has been developed as an aid to discussions of alternative approaches to fire risk analysis. The purpose is to show how each alternative seeks to address a few common concerns. Basic concepts and key elements — notably scenario structures, appropriate probability functions, and security and outcome measures — are defined and discussed, as are types of modeling approaches. Anumber of diverse examples are then presented using the framework to illustrate its value in making comparisons.

Notes: The infrared and Raman spectra (4000-50 cm-1) of polycrystalline K3N(SO3)3·2H2O have been recorded at 77K. Spectra of the 15N derivative, the anhydrous salt, an aqueous solution of the soluble sodium salt and K3N(SO3)3·2D2O have also been recorded. A normal coordinate analysis was applied to predict the 14N/15N isotopic frequency shifts. The potential energy distribution indicated extensive mixing of the normal modes. The N—S symmetric stretch is predicted to occur at 276 cm-1 (kN—S = 3.1 mdynes Å-1) and a Raman band at 293 cm-1 in the solid state spectrum is assigned to this mode. N—S antisymmetric stretching occurs at 912 and 887 cm-1 (888 and 861 cm-1 for 15N). The 14NS3 out-of-plane bending mode is mixed with NSO bending in features observed at 872 and 165 cm-1. The SO3 groups show characteristic group frequencies.

Notes: The polycrystalline IR and Raman spectra (4000-50 cm-1) of isoelectronic K2NH(SO3)2 and K2CH2(SO3)2 have been recorded at 77 K. These salts are isomorphous at ambient temperature (space group C2/c (C2h6)) but K2NH(SO3)2 undergoes a phase change on cooling to 77 K. Possible low-temperature structures for the latter are proposed and their predicted spectra are compared with the observed spectra. The phase change appears to be limited to an ordering of hydrogen atoms to give a structure with space symmetry P1(C11) with Z = 4. To assist with the band assignment, spectra of the 2H analogues of both salts and the 15N analogue of K2NH(SO3)2 have been recorded. Aqueous solution spectra, including qualitative Raman polarization data have also been obtained for the highly soluble salts (NH4)2NH(SO3)2 and Na2CH2(SO3)2·2.5H2O and their 2H analogues. For NH(SO3)22-, the skeletal modes are assigned frequencies of 858 cm-1 (νasymN—S), 842 cm-1 (νsymN—S) and c. 180 cm-1 (δNS2). The corresponding CH2(SO3)22- frequencies are 800 cm-1 (νasymC—S), 776 cm-1 (νsymC—S) and c. 180 cm-1 (δCS2). The SO3 groups show their characteristic frequencies which are very similar for both species.
