Notes: Summary The optimization of in situ derivatization and preconcentration of formaldehyde in air using solid phase microextraction with gas chromatographic determination was investigated. A dimethylpolysiloxane coating (7 μm) solid-phase microextraction needle was used in the final procedure as a support for derivatizing reagents such as 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine and acetylacetone. Standard concentrations of formaldehyde in air were obtained using a headspace technique and equilibrium concentrations of formaldehyde in air were calculated using Henry's law. After derivatization on the fiber, the derivative was thermally desorbed in the injector of a gas chromatograph and analyzed using an electron capture detector. A detection limit of 0.17 mg m−3 was obtained. Calibration was done at 296 K. Reproducibility of the method was 9.6%. Some real air samples were also analyzed. The method is very convenient and ideal for the rapid determination of formaldehyde in air.

Notes: Several slightly volatile or nonvolatile organic compounds were transformed directly in the solid sample inlet system into more volatile compounds by addition of an appropriate reagent to the sample. In this way, in several instances free organic acids could be obtained from their salts. A similar method was used to transform some amino acids into derivatives of diketopiperazine or of phthalic acid.

Notes: Knudsen cell mass spectrometric measurements are reported on the composition of vapour over solid and fused NaI, CsI, HoI3, DyI3, (NaI + HoI3), (NaI + DyI3, (CsI + HoI3) and (CsI + DyI3 systems. For the determination of evaporation thermodynamics, the assignment of the essential ions to their neutral precursors was carried out by determining ionization efficiency curves. Due to the spread in electron energy, the linear extrapolation and vanishing current methods, which are generally used in high temperature mass spectrometry for evaluation of efficiency curves, could be used with limitations only. The analytical energy-distribution difference method was used to determine the fine structure of the ionization efficiency curves. The method uncovered relationships between the detected ions and neutral vapour-phase species, and served to determine thermodynamic data with improved precision.

Notes: The mass spectra of twenty-eight monosubstituted trans-stilbenes in ortho, meta, para and alpha positions with —N(CH3)2, —NH2, —OCH3, —OH, —Br, —Cl, —F, —CH3, —COOH, —CN and —NO2 groups as substituents have been studied. A detailed fragmentation pathway is given for stilbene. This fragmentation, characteristic for most of the substituted stilbenes, takes place either from the molecular or from the [M - Substituent] ion. In o-nitro-, o-methoxy-,α-carboxyl- and α-methylstilbene, however, rearrangement reactions prior to fragmentation influence the fragmentation pattern.

Notes: A comparative study of metastable peaks formed in the first field free region during the fragmentation of stilbene and fluorene indicates that [M  -  1] ion of fluorene and the [M  -  15] ion of stilbene have a common [C13H9]+ (m/e 165) ion to only 75%. Demethylation of the stilbene cation leads to some extent to a more reactive [C13H9]+ species with a different structure.

Notes: Mass spectra of the saturated vapour and partial pressures of different species over solid InI3 were measured between 350 and 450 K with a mass spectrometric Knudsen effusion technique. By measuring appearance energies (AE) for different ions in the mass spectra, it was proved that InI3 evaporates congruently from the solid phase as InI3(g) and In2I6(g). Values of AE for In2In+ ions (n = 0-5) increase as n decreases, showing an interesting periodicity with In—I bond strengths. For these measurements an improved deconvolution of the ionization efficiency curves by fast Fourier transformation, using a combined Maxwellian and Gaussian electron energy distribution, was performed. By measuring ion abundances as a function of temperature, the Clausius-Clapeyron plots for all ions appearing in the mass spectra were drawn.
