    Notes: Abstract The effect of an on-line manometer on the variables of ventilation i.e. peak inspiratory pressure (PIP), mean airway pressure (MAP), positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP), and inspiratory to expiratory time ratio (I:E) was studied in vitro. Analysis of PIP, MAP, PEEP, and I:E was made during hand ventilation of a resuscitation mannequin at the preselected PIP of 15 and 25 cm water with and without a manometer. Use of the manometer decreased the range of variation in PIP, but the MAP was higher. This was due to an increased I:E while PEEP remained unchanged. An on-line manometer during hand ventilation prevents excessive PIP but may increase the MAP and therefore may not prevent development of a pneumothorax.

Die Ergebnisse bestätigen die wesentlichsten Eigenschaften des “blob” -Bildes, d. h. den Einfluß der nicht-uniformen Ausdehnung der Kette auf die Relaxationszeiten und die Intrinsic-Viskosität, unterscheiden sich im Detail jedoch von den Ergebnissen von DAUD und JANNINK sowie WEILL und DES CLOIZEAUX. Entgegen den Voraussagen wird ein zweites Plateau in [η(ω)] nicht beobachtet.
    Notes: The dynamics of polymer solutions are consistently treated by the BIXON-ZWANZIG theory including both hydrodynamic and excluded volume interactions. The results confirm generally the essential features of the “blob” picture in polymer dynamics, i.e. the influence of non-uniform chain expansion on the relaxation time spectra and the intrinsic viscosity, but differs in detail from results by DAOUD and JANNINK and WEILL and DES CLOIZEAUX. Especially no second plateau in [η(ω)] is observed.

A Rouse-Zimm type relaxation behaviour of the ultrasonic attenuation results from the calculations, and a relationship between the intrinsic shear and bulk viscosity is derived.

    Notes: A simple model of the x-ray Kα emission spectrum of copper metal has been proved to fit the experimental distribution curve of diffracted intensity fairly well, after correcting for profile distortion due to the spectrometer geometry and the diffraction process. Each Kα line can be described by a doublet of overlapping dispersion curves of different height and width. Although the physical relevance of the model is not clear at present, the simple analytical expression of the spectrum may be useful for some problems in x-ray diffractometry.

    Description / Table of Contents: The optimized ROUSE-ZIMM-theory by BIXON and ZWANZIG is used to derive consistently viscoelastic relaxation times of chain models including the hydrodynamic interaction and excluded volume. The intrinsic viscosity is calculated on the basis of these relaxation time spectra.
    Notes: Auf der Basis des von BIXON und ZWANZIG begründeten optimierten ROUSE-ZIMM-Modells werden viskoelastische Relaxationszeiten für Modellketten unter Berücksichtigung des excluded-volume-Effecktes und der hydrodynamischen Wechselwirkung in konsistenter Weise berechnet. Die Eigenviskosität wird auf der Grundlage der Relaxationszeit-spektren berechnet.
