Notes: Abstract Highly dispersed platinum was found in Pt-Sn/Al2O3 catalysts prepared by the sol-gel method, i.e., cogelation of aluminum tri-sec-butoxide and tetrabutyltin and subsequent impregnation with hexachloroplatinic acid. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the cell parameter of pure platinum is not modified in bimetallic Pt-Sn samples. Moreover, energy dispersive X-ray analysis studies (EDX) showed that platinum, but not tin, was detected in the catalysts where tin was incorporated by the sol-gel coprecipitation of tin and aluminum. Incorporation of tin into the alumina network is suggested.

Notes: Abstract The addition of calcium to zinc aluminate, prepared by coprecipitation methods, causes an increase in the specific surface area and a modification of the crystal morphology. However, the catalytic isobutane dehydrogenation properties remain unchanged. Careful characterization studies (XRD, TGA and SEM) indicate that calcium may be deposited on the zinc aluminate surface.

Notes: Abstract Sol-Gel Hydrotalcites were synthesized using magnesium ethoxide and variable aluminum sources: aluminum acetilacetonate, aluminum chloride, aluminum nitrate and aluminum sulfate; in all cases, the gelation was done at pH 10. X-ray diffraction studies show that the crystallinity depends on the aluminum precursor used. The crystallinity was found in the order aluminum acetylcetonate 〉 aluminum chloride 〉 aluminum nitrate 〉 aluminum sulfate. The precursor determines the sintering behavior as well.

Notes: Abstract Nb doped silica was prepared by the sol-gel method. The experimental variables were the pH (acidic and basic) and the Nb concentration (1.0–10.0 wt.%). The samples were calcined at 300°C and 600°C and analyzed by XRD, and FTIR. The TGA and DTA of the gels were also performed. From the XRD results the radial distribution function allowed us to establish the existence of the Si−O−Nb bond in the powders.

Notes: The photopolymerization of several di- and tetrafunctional (meth)acrylic monomers in the presence of a styrene-butadiene-styrene polymeric matrix (SBS) has been studied. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR) and differential scanning photocalorimetry (photo-DSC) were used as monitoring techniques to identify the photogenerated radicals and analyze photopolymerization profiles, radical environments, and radical secondary reactions. The study of the photopolymerization and/or photocrosslinking reactions of these monomers in the solid media was carried out by taking into consideration different factors, such as the influence of both monomer and photoinitiator structures on the hydrogen abstraction in the binder with formation of benzylic and allylic radicals, the polymerization of the monomers itself and the hydrogen abstraction reaction in the polymerized acrylic chains. Finally, irradiation of the system SBS/photoinitiator in the absence of monomer was also accomplished. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 2775-2783, 1998

Notes: A photocalorimetric study of butyl and lauryl acrylates (BA and LA) polymerization photoinitiated by several benzophenone derivatives is reported. Molecular weight measurements and end-chain group analysis of the samples are also described and the results are compared with those obtained by dilatometric technique. The role played by the long methylene chain in lauryl acrylate is discussed
