Notes: Disposable soft contact lenses based on HEMA-MAA hydrogels are examined using Raman and ATR/FTIR vibrational spectroscopies and thermal analysis. The main factors dealing with physical, chemical, and biological biocompatibility are evaluated in relation to those of long-wear soft contact lenses with the aim of individuating the most biocompatible lens. The Raman spectra of HEMA-MAA lenses show that some biocompatibility factors are affected by environmental conditions and, in particular, by changes in pH and ionic strength values. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Raman spectroscopy has been used for ophthalmological studies. Results obtained with traditional Raman instrumentation on animal and human lenses (normal and cataracted) and on the action of anticataract drugs are presented and discussed.

Notes: Dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO)-hydrogen chloride interactions have been studied by means of Raman and infrared spectroscopy both in solid 1:1 adducts and in liquid mixtures with DMSO:HCl molar ratios 〉2. The deuterated analogue solid 1:1 (DMSO-d6)-DCl was also prepared and studied. Vibrational data suggest the presence of a (DMSOHOSMD)+ cation with strong (O—H—O)+ hydrogen bonds both in the solid adducts and in the liquid mixtures. In the solid adducts the (CIHCl)- anion may be present. A relation between some biological properties of DMSO and its protonation is suggested.

Notes: Raman spectra of seven commercial poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lenses (IOLs) before and after implantation in the anterior chamber of rabbit eyes are reported and discussed in order to assess their biocompatibility. The material does not seem to change its structure on implantation; in particular the level of residual monomer, which is the main factor responsible for the biological intolerance of the lenses, remains constant.Providing a non-destructive structural probe, Raman spectroscopy is a suitable method for monitoring the biocompatibility of ophthalmological materials.

Notes: Raman and infrared spectra of liquid dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) and DMSO-water mixtures in a wide range of concentrations are reported and discussed. It is found that changes in the vibrational spectra can be related to a gradual insertion of water molecules in the cluster structure of liquid DMSO. In the more dilute aqueous solutions a gradual lowering of the νs=0 stretching frequency is observed and this can be related to the cooperative character of DMSO-water interactions. The interpretation of the spectra is in agreement with the capacity of DMSO for ‘breaking’ the structure of water in the more concentrated aqueous solutions and ‘enhancing’ it in very dilute solutions.
