Notizen: Under electron-impact, N-alkyl trifluoracetamides exhibit peaks due to [CF3]+ and [M — CF3]+. Ions corresponding to [COCF3]+ are absent. The base peak in many straight chain derivatives occurs at m/e 126 due to alkyl radical loss from the molecular ion; the mass of this ion rising to m/e 140 in the α-substituted N-sec-butyltrifluoracetamide and to m/e 154 in the tert-butyl derivative. High resolution measurements on a number of peaks indicate that they originate by loss of HF from other fragment ions.

Notizen: All the fluoro derivatives investigated exhibit strong molecular ions, which in many instances are also the base peaks. All the compounds with the exception of the p-acetyl derivative exhibit ions due to the loss of COCF3 and (CO + COCF3) from the molecular ion. Loss of CO from the molecular ion ranks as an important fragmentation except in cases where loss of a methyl group gives rise to ions which probably possess a tropylium structure. Alkyl ring substituted compounds exhibit intense hydrocarbon ions, which are also consistent with a tropylium structure.

Notizen: The effects of substituents on the fragmentation of N-aryl trifluoracetamides has been investigated. The base peak in all ring-monosubstituted derivatives is the molecular ion. Other important ions arise by loss of CF3 and COCF3 from the molecular ion, and the latter daughter ion fragments further, by loss of the aromatic substituent and by expulsion of small neutral molecules. The effects of substituents on the intensity of these ions is discussed. 1-Phenylethyl trifluoracetamide exhibits a base peak which is the molecular ion, wheras the corresponding 2-phenyl derivative has a molecular ion of very low intensity.
