    Notes: Summary Behavioural tests were carried out with 9 hymenopteran insect species, which ranked certain sets of coloured stimuli according to their subjective similarity to a previously memorized stimulus. Kendall's τ coefficient is employed for the analysis of correlation between these similarity rankings and the colour distance rankings predicted by various models of neural colour computation. The models are based on the measured spectral sensitivities of photoreceptor colour types and use a variety of simple colour coding systems to derive hypothetical colour distances. The correlation between the predictions of the models and the behavioural results serves as a measure for the likelihood of existence of a colour coding system. In all species, the similarity rankings can be best explained by assuming that colour is coded on a perceptual level by two colour opponent mechanisms. Brightness differences are ignored, indicating that an intensity-coding sub-system is not used in colour discrimination by the insects investigated. The weighting factors of the colour opponent mechanisms differ between species in detail, but not in the principles involved. It is thus possible to employ a standard measure of perceptual colour distance (colour hexagon distance) to predict the capacities of colour discrimination adequately in all the tested insects.

    Notes: Summary The membranes of the microvilli of UV- and green-photoreceptors of the ant Myrmecia gulosa have been studied with the freeze-fracture technique. Both inner fracture faces, the cytoplasmic P-face and the extracellular E-face, are covered by globular particles. The P-face particles appear to be randomly distributed, occasionally forming clusters. Their density is about 7,000/μm2, and their mean diameter is 8.5 nm. The E-face particles, however, are arranged in an ordered square pattern with a center-to-center spacing of 9 nm. The density and distribution of P- and E-face particles are the same in both the UV- and the green-photoreceptor membranes. No differences were found in the ultrastructural organization of photoreceptor membranes after dark or light adaptation. It is suggested that the P-face particles represent rhodopsin molecules.

    Notes: Abstract We present a digital atlas of the glomeruli in the antennal lobe of the honeybee, Apis mellifera, accessible to the scientific community via the Internet. The atlas allows the identification of glomeruli in preparations in which the glomeruli can be recognized, be it in sections or in whole-mounts. The high resolution of the anatomical data upon which the atlas is based and its electronic form should prove to be an important tool for anyone involved in the study of the honeybee antennal lobe. Its accessibility via the Internet is a step towards interactive and freely accessible databases of animal brains.
