    Notes: Strategies are needed for reconciling competing demands at the regional level when areas are to be selected for protection and there are associated costs, possibly equivalent to forgone development opportunties. As an alternative to the fixed scaling (or weighting) of costs and benefits required by cost-benefit analysis, multi-criteria analyses allow the exploration of alternative weightings and a summary trade-off curve to determine preferred solutions. For alternative sets of areas, total cost could be plotted against total represented biodiversity, but a more consistent approach should look at trade-off space at the level of individual areas. For a given weighting, an area is assigned protection if and only if its contribution to total biodiversity, CB, exceeds its equivalent cost, EC (in biodiversity units). Because CB for a given area depends on which other areas are also protected, it can be more or less than EC. Here we develop an iterative strategy for selecting areas, such that, for a given weighting, an area is in the final protected set if and only if its final CB value is greater than its EC value. Sensitivity analysis is used to identify those areas that: (1) are assigned protection even when low weight is given to biodiversity, or (2) are not assigned protection even when high weight is given to biodiversity. This approach is applicable in principle to any surrogate measure for biodiversity; here examples are presented in which environmental data are summarized as an environmental space.

    Notes: Protection of regional biodiversity requires that priority for protection of individual areas be based on both the contribution the area can make to representing overall biodiversity and the degree to which the area, in the absence of action, is vulnerable to loss of its biodiversity. Attempts to apply these criteria together largely have been ad hoc. A solution to this problem is presented for environmental surrogate data, based on ‘environmental diversity’ (ED). ED uses a standard ecological continuum model to link environmental pattern to species-level biodiversity, so that a set of areas can be characterized by its relative expected biodiversity. This allows explicit incorporation of estimates of area-vulnerability, interpreted as the relative probability that any member species will not persist, into biodiversity assessments. The contribution of a given area to regional expected biodiversity is influenced not only by its own vulnerability value, but also by the vulnerability of other areas. Increasing the degree of protection of any area (reducing its vulnerability) will increase expected biodiversity: however, expected regional biodiversity sometimes may be maximized when limited resources for protection are directed to an area with lower vulnerability rather than to one with higher vulnerability. The allocation of land uses in a region need not be viewed as an all-or-nothing assignment of protection. The effect of a particular management regime on the biodiversity of a given area can be equated with some consequent degree of vulnerability; viewed positively, a management regime that offers some degree of biodiversity protection can make a measurable contribution to the protection of the biodiversity of a region.

    Notes: Existing theories on the effect of mass transport on the rate (uniformity) of chemical reaction within a porous solid assume that the reaction is of integer order. However the carbon-carbon-dioxide reaction has the kinetic rate form, rate = k1pCO2/(1 + k2pCO + k3pCO2). For conditions where the retarding effect of carbon monoxide is very pronounced, the buildup of small concentrations of carbon monoxide within the porous graphite can lead to appreciable nonuniformity of gasification. Thus the criteria normally used to predict uniformity of gasification break down. A numerical integration of the combined differential equation of mass transport and chemical reaction has been performed, with rate constants for the carbon-carbon dioxide reaction taken from the literature. The results indicate that extreme nonuniformity of reaction can exist even when the change in carbon dioxide concentration from the exterior of the sample to the interior is small. The results are similar to experimental determinations of non-uniformity of gasification, obtained by determining the porosity of reacted graphite samples as a function of depth from the reacting face. Experimentally nonuniformity of reaction was observed for gasification rates a hundredfold lower than the usual Thiele criteria would predict, probably because of carbon monoxide inhibition.

    Notes: The two systems for artificial hip joints in use at present are metal-on-metal and metal-on-plastic. There are many variables affecting friction and wear, which include diameter, sphericity, relative geometry of the components, and surface roughness. Tests in a simulating machine incorporated cyclic load and motion. Frictional torque of metal-on-plastic joints increased with diameter; Charnley 22 mm diameter producing lowest friction. For metal-on-metal the contact situation produced variable results, but friction was higher than for the plastic joints. Reciprocating friction machine tests suggested that high molecular weight polyethylene and AP4 polyester gave low friction and wear. Vitallium gave at least three times the friction of the plastic using γ-globulin solution as lubricant; but wear appeared to be much less.

    Notes: Some of the mechanical properties of regrown canine tendons are compared to those of normal tendons of young and mature animals. Patellar and Achilles tendons from 12 beagle dogs were removed and studied with their bone origin and insertions. Mechanical tests were performed within 24 hr and test conditions simulated the physiological function of the tendon in vivo at room temperature. Specimens were soaked in Ringers solution and mounted in an Instron testing machine with load deflection curves plotted automatically. The parameters used for analysis were load extension, stress relaxation, elastic limit, and strain rate dependence.The regrown tendons in young animals appeared to quickly adjust in dimension and structure so that their properties were not significantly different from those of normal tendons on a load extension basis.The normal tendons were stiffer than regrown ones but the modulus of elasticity increased with age. The Achilles were stiffer than patellar tendons. Cyclic loading with 25 kg did not affect reconstructed tendon models, although some increase in stiffness was noted. The elastic modulus decreased with an increase in ambient temperature and increasing strain rate.

    Notes: This study investigated the use of a prototype expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane attached to bone with butyl-cyanoacrylate, in facilitating guided bone regeneration into bone defects and around titanium screws in rabbit femora. Two experimental models were used to assess bone growth. The first model investigated two unicortical defects in each femora. The second was bone growth in a 500-μm engineered space around one transcortical titanium screw. In the first model there was a significant increase in bone formation at 1 and 2 months in the membrane groups (p 〈 0.01) as compared to the controls. In the second model the percentage of bone in contact with the implant was significant at 1 and 2 months in the defects covered with membrane compared to the uncovered defects. The uncovered defects had fibrous tissue adherent to the implant continuous with the overlying soft tissue. Our study demonstrated three points: this membrane can be used to increase bone regeneration into defects, this technique allows bone to grow directly around an implant, and butyl-cyanoacrylate can be used in deep soft tissue and bone applications without any apparent deleterious effects. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The surface replacement hip prosthesis reported represents an attempt to improve upon some aspects of the present design of total hip. The prosthesis comprises a cap fitted over the femoral head and a liner fixed into the socket, both being cemented with methyl methacrylate. The chief advantage of this design is preservation of bone stock. The prostheses were inserted bilaterally into six dogs, and whilst ten joints failed, one case was strikingly successful at two years follow-up. It was concluded that the design showed sufficient advantages over current total hips and that there was sufficient possibility of success in some application, to merit further study.
