Notes: Summary We found a left superficial ulnar artery in the cadaver of a Japanese woman. This anomalous vessel originated from the brachial artery at a site 55 mm distal to the inferior border of the teres major muscle and medial to the median nerve, ran downward and medially superficial to the forearm flexor muscles, and then downward to enter the hand. It formed superficial and deep palmar arches with the radial artery. The clinical importance of the anomalous ulnar artery is discussed.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectrometry (FDMS) was applied to the study of the initiation mechanism of thermal polymerization of styrenes. The FD mass spectrum was measured for a cooligomer of α,α,β-trideuterostyrene and p-methoxystyrene produced by thermal polymerization using ethylbenzene as a solvent, and this was compared with the spectrum of an oligomer of p-methoxystyrene. The above two FD mass spectra showed characteristic differences, depending upon the number of hydrogen and deuterium atoms and upon the presence or absence of the methoxy group, in the oligomers. Molecular species observed in the spectra were identified based on these considerations. As a result, we could distinguish the “true trimer” produced from three monomers from the “cross trimer” produced from fragments of five monomers. It was found that the “true trimer” was the major constituent in the trimer region, and that the “true trimer” was produced mainly by the cage reaction between initiating radicals.

Notes: The advancing contact angle of water on plastic film coatings on metal was measured against both the air and the metal side surfaces after their being peeled off from the metal substrate. The plastic used was a methacrylate copolymer, and it was baked on cadmium, aluminum, nickel, iron, and gold. Contact angle for the air side was about 74° at 25°C. for all metals, but the values on the metal side differed considerably, ranging from 76° for gold to 50° for cadmium. At the same time the static breaking strengths of the same films were investigated by applying a knife-edge vertically to the film with increasing load and measuring the weight at which the electric resistance through the film became zero. Increasing film thickness gave increasing strength, but further thickening made the film weaker with a tendency for crack formation. The film-metal combinations of larger contact angle difference generally also showed the higher breaking strength.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectra of normal and deuterated styrene oligomers synthesized in several alkylbenzenes were measured. Analysis of the mechanism of thermal oligomerization was carried out by identifying the molecular species in the reaction system using field desorption mass spectra. As a result, the existence of several kinds of molecular species was confirmed. The minor molecular species originated from dissolved oxygen, from the cleavage of solvent radicals to which oxygen was attached, or from H-D exchange in the oligomerization of deuterated styrene. The major molecular species originated from radical telomerization of solvents and styrene dimers, from the recombination termination reaction, and from the cage reaction between initiating radicals. Field desorption mass spectrometry was found to be useful for analyzing the mechanism of styrene oligomerization as well as characterizing the oligomers.

Notes: The Raman optical activity (ROA) spectra of some azo dyes binding to cyclodextrins have been measured. This appears to be the first successful attempt to measure the ROA induced in achiral molecules by intermolecular interaction with chiral molecules. There was no relationship between the ROA signals and the Raman shifts accompanying inclusion phenomenon. From comparison of the ROA spectra of methyl orange with α-cyclodextrin and congo red with γ-cyclodextrin, it seems that the ROA spectra reflect the difference in the positions of the SO3- groups in the guest molecules.
