Notes: Abstract Recent measured bands in the mid IR of parent insulating compounds of cuprate superconductors [Perkins et al. Phys. Rev. Lett.71 1621 (1993)] are interpreted as multimagnon infrared (IR) absorption assisted by phonons. We present results for the coupling constant of light with this excitations and exact diagonalization results for the spectra and compare with interacting spin wave theory. The observed structures correspond to the absorption of one phonon plus two magnons and one phonon plus higher multimagnon absorption processes. Our results imply that IR absorption can be used as a unique probe of quantum antiferromagnetic systems.

Notes: Abstract We discuss two-magnon phonon-assisted infrared absorption in two-dimensional Heisenberg systems like the parent insulating high-T c cuprates (spin 1/2) and nickelates (spin 1). The theoretical line shape is compared with experiments. In the case of the cuprates it explains the mid-infrared peaks observed in the insulator. In the case of the nickelates the predicted line shape is also shown to agree with the experiments. We discuss the possibility to observe these excitations in other experiments.
