    Notes: Summary When compared with sham-operated ad libitum-fed controls, weanling rats with lesions primarily destroying the dorsomedial hypothalamic nuclei (DMNL rats) showed reduced ponderal and linear growth and food intake, normal carcass fat but increased carcass protein. Among the metabolic parameters measured, DMNL rats showed only decreased incorporation of palmitate into epididymal fat pad phospholipid and triglyceride. When sham-operated controls were pair-fed with DMNL rats, they showed growth changes almost identical with those observed in lesioned rats. However, their carcass protein was lower than both that of the lesioned rats and the ad libitum-fed controls. Metabolically, the sham-operated, pair-fed controls showed decreased incorporation of palmitate into triglyceride of epididymal fat pads and decreased oxidation of glucose and increased incorporation into total lipid of the diaphragm. When previous data on growth hormone, insulin, triglyceride and cholesterol are compared with the present findings it is suggested that dorsomedial lesions cause a subcaloric-type dwarfism that does not involve adenohypophyseal secretions and their target organs affecting growth.

    Notes: Summary Weanling rats received bilateral electrolytic lesions destroying the areas of the ventromedial (VMN) and dorsomedial (DMN) hypothalamic nuclei, respectively. Trunk blood was collected at sacrifice (Experiment 1 and 2∶ 31 days, Experiment 3∶ 14 days) for the determination of plasma growth hormone (GH) by radioimmunoassay. Rats with DMN lesions showed consistently normal to slightly elevated plasma GH levels while animals with VMN lesions showed significantly reduced plasma GH levels. Linear growth was reduced by both types of hypothalamic lesions but body weight gains and food intake were reduced only in the DMN lesioned rats. Carcass fat was greatly elevated in VMN lesioned rats, moderately elevated in one experiment in the DMN animals and normal in another experiment. These data confirm a previous hypothesis that growth retardation in DMN rats is not due to low circulating GH level but rather represents a hypocaloric-type dwarfism.

    Notes: The plane strain fracture toughness and fracture mechanisms of several tough engineering plastics have been studied and compared with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), a relatively brittle polymer. The tough polymers all are observed to form a multiple craze zone at the crack tip, which is shown to be the primary source of plane strain fracture toughness in these materials. The multiple craze zone is retained during slow crack growth but is metastable, and at a critical stress intensity and associated crack velocity, the system passes through a transition to a greatly accelerated single craze mode of unstable propagation.

    Notes: Interpenetrating polymer networks of polyurethane and unsaturated polyester were prepared by reaction injection molding (RIM) and transfer molding. The structures of the molded samples were analyzed by electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical analysis. It was found that polymer morphology and dynamic mechanical properties depend strongly on the molding temperature, reaction rate and reaction sequence. Simplified structure models based on Takayanagi's model and sample morphology can predict the storage modulus reasonably well but not the tanδ.

    Notes: A free radical copolymerization model is proposed for simulating the reaction rates and conversions of styrene monomer and unsaturated polyester resins during curing. This model is based on film theory in which the rate constants reflect both reaction and diffusion resistances. Differential scanning calorimetry in combination with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to measure the overall and individual reactivities of reacting species. Model parameters are determined from experimental data. The applicability of this model is demonstrated in a cure simulation.

    Notes: A multiparameter corresponding-states correlation has been developed to describe fossil-fluid thermodynamic properties needed to design fluid-flow, heat-exchange, and other unit operations in coal-liquefaction plants. Three equation-of-state parameters, a molecular-size/separation parameter, a molecular-energy parameter, and a molecular-orientation parameter are used to characterize nonpolar and slightly polar aromatic hydrocarbons. A conformal-solution model is developed for predicting thermodynamic properties of coal-derived mixtures.
