Notes: Successful separation of the six major hop bitter compounds by micellar electrokinetic chromatography depends critically on precise pH control. Any factor which can affect the actual in-column pH must, therefore, also be carefully controlled: it has been found that temperature-induced changes of the buffer pH can cause loss of resolution and even reversals in elution order. The pH level at which the effects occur suggests that the pKa values of the analytes are modified by the micellar medium.

Notes: The chromatographic performance of 50 μm internal diameter (i.d.) fused silica columns coated with up to 2 μm films of immobilized SE-54 (methyl phenyl (5%) silicone) is evaluated under gas chromatographic conditions. The influence of pressure drop on the plate height is discussed. In comparison to thick film 250-530 μm i.d. columns, much higher efficiencies and faster analyses are obtained. Practical examples, performed on a standard GC instrument, illustrate the features of thick film 50 μm i.d. columns.

Notes: This review presents the different chiral selectors used in capillary electrophoresis (CE) for the separation of enantiomers. The use of charged cyclodextrins, crown ethers, polysaccharides, proteins, natural and synthetic micelles, macrocyclic antibiotics and ergot alkaloids is discussed in detail. Neutral native and derivatized cyclodextrins are not treated because several review articles have already been published on this topic. Recent developments like the application of two chiral selectors in the same background electrolyte are highlighted.
