Notes: Abstract  The Stvb-i gene confers stripe disease resistance to rice. For positional cloning, we constructed a physical map spanning 1.8-cM distance between flanking markers, consisting of 18 bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones, around the Stvb-i locus on rice chromosome 11. The 18 clones were isolated by screening a BAC library derived from a japonica cultivar, Shimokita, with three Stvb-i-linked RFLP markers and DraI-digested DNAs of a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) clone. The results of Southern hybridization and restriction enzyme analyses indicated that these BAC clones are contiguous and cover about a 700-kb region containing the Stvb-i allele. Utilizing end and internal fragments of the BAC insert DNAs, 33 molecular markers were generated within a small chromosomal region including the Stvb-i locus. Genotyping analysis with these markers for a resistant cultivar and four nearby recombinants selected from 120 F2 individuals indicated that Stvb-i is contained within an approximately 286-kb region covered with two overlapping BAC clones.

Notes: Abstract Ce3+-doped, inorganic-organic hybrid monoliths were prepared from Si(OCH3)4, CH3 Si(OCH3)3, CeCl3 and various functionalized silanes (FSs) such as amino- (APTM), glycidyloxy- (GPTM), trifluoro- (TFTM) and chloro-(CPTM) silanes at 60°C by the sol-gel process. The functional groups of silane coupling agents coordinated with Ce3+ ions in the inorganic-organic materials. Ce3+-doped materials were transparent under the preparation conditions of FS/Ce3+ ratio of 100 and 1.0 × 10−4 mol/cm3 of Ce3+ concentration. Optical properties such as absorption spectra, emission spectra and fluorescence quantum yield for the Ce3+-doped hybrid materials were strongly affected by the Ce3+ ion environment. Emission spectra were observed for the Ce3+-doped materials below 400 nm. The emission intensities of the materials prepared from TFTM, CPTM and without FS were approximately 100 times as much as those of materials prepared from APTM and GPTM. The fluorescence quantum yield was highest (11%) for the material prepared from TFTM hybrid materials.

Notes: Abstract Eu2+-doped inorganic-organic hybrid materials, which are potentially suitable for a tunable laser in the near ultra violet and blue region, were prepared through the photoreduction of Eu3+ ions in the materials under the irradiation of the fourth harmonic wave light (266 nm) of the Nd:YAG laser. The hybrid materials doped with Eu3+ ions were prepared from Si(OCH3)4, CH3Si(OCH3)3, EuCl3 and chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (CPTM). After the prehydrolized silica sol was added to the Eu3+-containing solution, Eu3+-doped transparent inorganic-organic hybrid material was obtained by drying at 50°C. The emission peak around 450–475 nm due to the charge transfer transition (5d-4f) of Eu2+ ions increased with the laser irradiation time. Eu3+ ions were effectively photoreduced to Eu2+ ions in pore-free materials prepared at high CPTM to Eu3+ ratios. Eu2+ ions were generated by the photodecomposition of the bond between Eu3+ and Cl (Cl− or Cl(CH2)3 in CPTM).

Notes: The title compounds were synthesized and their homopolymerizations and copolymerizations with styrene and a number of acrylic monomers were investigated. Methyl 3-vinylacetylsalicylate was prepared in a five-step synthesis from 2-ethylphenol in an overall yield of 40%. Methanolysis of this compound gave methyl 5-vinylsalicylate in 63% yield. Hydrolysis of methyl 3-vinylsalicylate gave a nearly quantitative yield of 3-vinylsalicylic acid which could be acetylated to 3-vinylacetylsalicyclic acid (3-vinyl aspirin). 3-Vinylsalicylic acid derivatives were readily homopolymerized and copolymerized with styrene, methyl methacrylate, and methacrylic acid, and 3-vinylsalicyclic acid was copolymerized with a number of vinyl and acrylic monomers. Copolymer compositions were determined by examination of 1H-NMR spectra.

Notes: It has been demonstrated that the poly(vinyl fluoride) film can be fluorinated by exposing the polymer to an environment of fluorine under atmospheric pressure and at ambient temperature. Fluorine content, infrared spectra, thermal properties, and solubilities in the polar solvents were investigated for the fluorinated products and the following results were obtained. In the case of films less than 10 μ in thickness, the fluorination appeared to proceed homogeneously. Under any fluorinating conditions applied, i.e., fluorine pressure of up to 800 mm Hg and temperatures of up to 90°C, the fluorine content never exceeded 65% which corresponds to a composition of C2F2.5H1.5. The activation energy of the reaction was calculated to be 6.8 kcal/mole. The polymer reacted with a small amount of oxygen contained in the fluorine to form acyl fluoride groups. The fluorinated films became insoluble in boiling N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, and dimethyl sulfoxide, but colored gradually to a dark brown. The occurrence of some crosslinking in the products was revealed.
