Notizen: Summary In this study we have used a computed tomographic (CT) method using profile analysis to measure the diameter of the basilar artery. In a search for a noninvasive and repeatable method to substitute for the traditional arteriography in the evaluation of the degree of cerebral vasospasm, we employed both CT and arteriography to measure the diameter of the basilar artery in eight adult mongrel dogs weighing between 7 and 12 kg. In three of these animals, assessments were made before and after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) induced by injecting autologous arterial blood into the cistern magna. It was found that the basilar artery diameter as evaluated by CT was 47% larger than that measured by arteriography. However, there was a very good correlation (n=63, r=0.75, p〈0.001) between the two methods. This paper presents a new model for the measurement of the basilar artery diameter, one which may also provide a safer method for the evaluation of vasospasm in humans.

Notizen: Sheet molding compound (SMC) compression molding growth will benefit from faster cycles and more uniform cure so as to reduce in-plane thermal residual stress and resulting warpage in the molded part. These improvements require an in-depth study of the mold thermal design. Here we use a finite element model to analyze the quasi-steady temperature distribution in a plane perpendicular to the heating channels of a representative mold, and a finite difference model to investigate the cure dynamics at critical regions. Several changes in the mold heating system and operating conditions were considered and their effects on the temperature distribution and cure time were studied. It was assumed that the steam condensate is well drained and enough steam is supplied so that the steam tube walls are kept at a constant temperature. An important conclusion of the present study is that better insulation of the mold from the press does not help much in improving the uniformity of cavity surface temperature or cure. It was also found that reducing the distance between two consecutive steam tubes beyond the distance from the steam tube to cavity surface will not yield a significant change. The most practical way to give both more uniform cavity surface temperature and faster cure is to have higher steam temperature for the region where the charge is initially placed.

Notizen: An apparatus is described which measures simultaneously a relative change in vibrational damping and in transient electrical charging of a wafer specimen of plastic during the interval immediately following an impact blow. When impacting cycles are repeated regularly (at an energy less than the destructive level for nonfatigued specimen), the curves relating either electrical or mechanical responses to the number of impact blows show significant changes of slope at coincident intervals of the impact fatigue history, and either of these correlated effects can be used to indicate successive changes in microstructure which lead to the ultimate fracture endpoint of the fatigue test. These fatigue tests were used to study the effect of compositional and mixing variables on the properties of some heterophase thermoplastics. This study demonstrated that impact fatigue resistance can be poor in some plastic compositions which are rated to have superior impact resistance by tensile testing. Also, some special fillers in the correct quantity may improve fatigue resistance even though such filler loading will degrade other desirable tensile properties.

Notizen: This study explored the effects of chemical composition, extent of polyesterification and possible side-reactions upon the rheological behavior of a variety of oil-modified, glyceryl phthalate alkyds in both melt and in dilute solutions with several solvents. Correlative data were obtained on molecular weight and on other aspects of solubility and drying properties important to paint technology. Viscometric data proved very useful in relating variances of reaction degree with usage properties of these polymeric materials. Those data suggest a viewpoint of the gel point mechanism which enhances practical utility of polyesterification theory. This hypothesis proposes that alkyd synthesis is not a homogeneous reaction throughout, and that phase separation creates a colloidal dispersion in the reacting mass long before gelatification occurs. Classical polyesterification theory can predict the event of initial phase separation; other process variables affect the relative stability of the transition colloid which ultimately coalesces into the final gel structure. Practical properties of alkyds in paint vehicles can be adjusted to satisfy varying requirements by arresting the reaction at different levels before or in the transition region. Measurements of melt viscosity and intrinsic viscosity are especially sensitive and convenient probes for control of process and product in terms of this concept.
