Notes:
Summary In anaesthetized dogs the isolated m. gracilis, connected with the body only by its nerve and immobilized with succinylcholine, is perfused with blood and the resistance to flow is recorded. If optimal conditions are observed with regard to oxygenation of the perfusing blood and the temperature of the muscle, quick oscillations of resistance are observed which are symmetrical on both sides with frequencies up to 20/min. As a rule the oscillations are synchronous with respiration or coordinated with the respiratory rhythm in integer multiple relations. Their amplitude depends on the depth of respiration and is maximal when respiration is prevented by tracheal occlusion. The oscillations of the resistance are synchronous or coordinated in integer multiple relations also with blood pressure waves. It is concluded that also in normal spontaneous respiration a close coupling exists between respiratory and cardiovascular innervation. The consequences for the classification of blood pressure waves are discussed.
