Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary 63 newborns having received in total 93 exchange transfusions were explored for the risk of a transfusion-conditioned hepatitis up to 6 months. In addition to clinical observations, the measurements of serum transaminases and the evidence of Australia-antigen were considered as control items in these investigations. Clinically, no case of hepatitis could be observed; an elevation of SGPT in one case after 3 months could possibly relate to an anicteric hepatitis. With negative basic values of Australia-antigen in blood donors and recipients no positive evidence could be found in subsequent control examinations. According to these investigations, the risk of hepatitis after an exchange transfusion is practically not present provided that exact donor selection according to modern criteria is observed.
