Notes: Abstract Membrane fractions from Cucurbita maxima hypocotyls were isolated in a medium which inhibits the action of endogenous phospholipases. After removal of soluble phosphatases by Sepharose 2B-CL column chromatography, an auxin-stimulated ATPase activity was found in membrane fractions from linear sucrose gradients. In the presence of 10-4 M phenylacetic acid (PAA), the stimulation by indol-3-acetic acid (IAA) exhibited a bimodal concentration dependence with maximal stimulation of about 50% at 10-6 M IAA. Without PAA, only a high concentration of 10-4 M IAA was stimulatory, whereas 10-6 M IAA had no apparent effect and 10-8 M IAA exhibited weak inhibition. PAA alone had only weak or no effects. The effects of IAA must be considered as hormone-specific. The ATPase activity in the presence of 10-4 M PAA was activated only by 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), an active auxin analogue, but not by the inactive stereoisomers, 2,3-D and 3,5-D. Comparison with marker enzyme profiles suggested that part of the auxin-stimulated ATPase was localized on plasma membranes as well as other compartments. Thus, the auxin-stimulated ATPase may become a useful tool in the investigation of the mechanism of action of auxin.

Notes: Samples were taken of the atmospheric particulate matter over Fairbanks Alaska in the winter of 1985, and from wood stoves burning the major wood types locally available. These samples were then analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). A PAH emission profile was determined from the wood stove samples and applied to the atmospheric samples to determine the residential wood combustion contribution to the local atmospheric particulate burden. Emission profiles for coal burning and automobile emissions for PAH were also used to estimate their relative contributions.

Notes: Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) mono- and multilayers of preformed atactic and isotactic poly(octadecyl methacrylate)s were studied on gold surfaces and silicon wafers. The average orientation of the carbonyl bond of the ester group was found to be about 50° with respect to the normal to the substrate, and the side chains were concluded to be oriented perpendicular to the substrate. Furthermore, the degree of side chain orientation increased on going from a single monolayer to a multilayer. This is explained by an interdigitation of the side chains during or after the transfer process. A peculiar transfer behavior of the atactic samples is discussed in terms of the effect of disorder of the first layer on the transfer process. On heating multilayers of the polymers, melting of the crystalline domains formed by the side chains was observed at temperatures of about 35°C to 40°C. However, the layer structure appeared to be stable up to 100°C. The oriented structure was completely recovered after cooling down to room temperature.

Notes: n-Amyltriethoxysilane and phenyltriethoxysilane were hydrolyzed in organic solvents in the presence of acidic or basic catalysts. The bulky substituents allow relatively large amounts of low-molecular-weight partial hydrolysis products to be isolated and stabilize the silanol functions present against further condensation. Cyclic ethoxypolysiloxanols in the molecular weight range 500-1000 are principal products of acid catalyzed hydrolysis. More extensive condensation occurs under alkaline conditions. Relatively high yields of low-polymeric silsesquioxanes (octamers and possibly hexamers) are then obtained. The major product obtained from phenyltriethoxysilane, when hydrolyzed in a ketone solvent with a quaternary base as catalyst, is an amorphous high polymer virtually free of functional groups. In inert solvents in the presence of traces of catalyst a very facile rearrangement occurs, giving the octamer (and possibly the hexamer) in very high yield.
