Notes: Abstract The hierarchy of moments of the Boltzmann equation for a binary mixture of mechanically different Maxwell molecules is exactly solved. The solution corresponds to a nonequilibrium homogeneous steady state generated by an external force that accelerates particles of each species (or “color”) along opposite directions. As a consequence, macroscopic fluxes are induced in spite of the absence of concentration gradients. Explicit expressions for the fluxes of mass and momentum as functions of the field strength, the mass ratio, the molar fractions, and the interaction constant ratio are obtained. In particular, the color conductivity coefficient reduces to the mutual diffusion coefficient in the zero-field limit. Some physically interesting limiting cases are discussed. The maximum-entropy method is used to construct an approximate velocity distribution function from the exact knowledge of the mass and momentum fluxes. This distribution is exact up to second order in the color field and also in the limit of large color field.

Notes: Abstract We study the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model kinetic equation with a velocity-dependent collision frequency. We derive the conditions that must be verified in order to keep the main physical properties of the Boltzmann equation, i.e.,H-theorem and conservation laws. The particular case of the so-called VHP interaction is considered, and the resulting kinetic equation is solved for a homogeneous and isotropic gas. Overpopulation phenomena are observed and analyzed for some kinds of initial conditions. The results are compared, where possible, with the exact solution of the Boltzmann equation.

Notes: Abstract An exact solution of the Boltzmann equation for a binary mixture of “colored” Maxwell molecules is found. The solution corresponds to a nonequilibrium homogeneous steady state created by a nonconservative external force. Explicit expressions for the moments of the distribution function are obtained. By using information theory, an approximate velocity distribution function is constructed, which is exact in the limits of small and large field strengths. Comparison is made between the exact energy flux and the one obtained from the information theory distribution.

Notes: An explicit factorization of the Fourier symbol matrix functions generated by Sommerfeld diffraction problems with oblique derivatives is obtained. For this purpose a new prefactorization procedure is developed which makes use of factorization through weighted L2 spaces. These results yield a representation of a generalized inverse of the corresponding matrix Wiener-Hopf operator and the asymptotic behaviour of the solution at the edge of the screen. © 1997 by B. G. Notes: A class of diffraction problems for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation is studied where the boundary conditions on a canonical screen contain oblique derivatives. The problem in weak formulation is reduced to a system of pseudodifferential equations on a half-line. The Fredholm property is characterized in dependence of the parameters, index formulas are given, and, if necessary, a normalization of the problem is implemented. © 1997 by B.G. Notes: This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of bidimensional bonded lap joints. For this purpose, the stress singularities occurring at the intersections of the adherend-adhesive interfaces with the free edges are first investigated and a method for computing both the order and the intensity factor of these singularities is described briefly. After that, a simplified model, in which the adhesive domain is reduced to a line, is derived by using an asymptotic expansion method. Then, assuming that the assembly debonding is produced by a macro-crack propagation in the adhesive, the associated energy release rate is computed. Finally, a homogenization technique is used in order to take into account a preliminary adhesive damage consisting of periodic micro-cracks. Some numerical results are presented.
