    Notes: Abstract Analysis of the multi-channel seismic reflection, magnetic and bathymetric data collected along a transect, 1110 km long parallel to 13° N latitude across the Bay of Bengal was made. The transect is from the continental shelf off Madras to the continental slope off Andaman Island in water depths of 525 m to 3350 m and across the Western Basin (bounded by foot of the continental slope of Madras and 85° E Ridge), the 85° E Ridge, the Central Basin (between the 85° E Ridge and the Ninetyeast Ridge), the Ninetyeast Ridge and the Sunda Arc. The study revealed eight seismic sequences, H1 to H8 of parallel continuous to discontinuous reflectors. Considering especially depth to the horizons, nature of reflection and on comparison with the published seismic reflection results of Currayet al. (1982), the early Eocene (P) and Miocene (M) unconformities and the base of the Quaternary sediments (Q) are identified on the seismic section. Marked changes in velocities also occur at their boundaries. In the Western Basin the acoustic basement deepening landward is inferred as a crystalline basement overlain by about 6.7 km of sediment. In the Central Basin possibly thicker sediments than in the Western Basin are estimated. The sediments in the Sunda Arc area are relatively thick and appears to have no distinct horizons. But the entire sedimentary section appears to be consisting of folded and possibly faulted layers. The comparatively broader wavelength magnetic anomalies of the Central Basin also indicate deeper depth of their origin. Very prominent double humped feature of the 85° E Ridge and broad basement swell of the Ninetyeast Ridge are buried under about 2.8 km thick sediments except over the prominent basement high near 92° E longitude. The positive structural relief of the buried 85° E Ridge in the area is reflected in magnetic signature of about 450 nT amplitude. Flexural bulge of the 85° E Ridge and subsidence of the Ninetyeast Ridge about 24 cm my−1 rate since early Eocene period have been inferred from the seismic sequence analysis.

The effect of the exogenous intervention in the industry studied appears to have a dampening impact on competitive responses. Our research inquiry addresses some issues raised on competition, in general, by Weitz (1985) and specifically on competitive responses by Robinson (1988) and Gatignon, Anderson, and Helsen (1989).

    Notes: The histochemistry of lipids, Δ5-3β-, 20α and 17β-hydroxy-steroid dehydrogenases, glucose-6-phosphate and isocitrate dehydrogenases, NADH and NADPH-diaphorases and acid phosphatase has been studied in the ovary of the cyclic hamster. None of the enzymes studied was present in the preantral follicles on day 1 (day of ovulation) or any day of the 4-day cycle. With the development of antral follicles (on day 3) a few fine lipid droplets appeared in the granulosa cells. The theca interna exhibited moderate amounts of NADH-diaphorase, Δ5-3β-HSDH, 17β-HSDH and slight NADPH-diaphorase, G-6-PDH and ICDH, whereas the granulosa cells of antral follicles showed weak Δ5-3β-HSDH, NADH-diaphorase and moderate 17β-HSDH but intense NADPH-diaphorase, G-6-PDH and ICDH activities. All enzyme activities in both theca and granulosa became more pronounced on proestrus (day 4).In the corpora lutea (CL) all the above enzymes were present on day 1 and increased on day 2, followed by a rapid decline on days 3 and 4. Lipids were sparsely represented in CL on days 1 and 2 but showed marked accumulations on days 3 and 4. Likewise, acid phosphatase increased on days 3 and 4. The enzyme 20α-HSDH was not detectable in the CL.The interstitium showed moderate amounts of lipids, Δ5-3β-HSDH and NADH-diaphorase while 17β-HSDH, NADPH-diaphorase, G-6-PDH and ICDH were only weakly present. There were no appreciable changes in the lipid and various enzymes in the interstitium throughout the cycle except for Δ5-3β-HSDH which increased slightly on the afternoon of day 4. Acid phosphatase was not detected in appreciable amounts in the interstitium throughout the cycle.These findings suggest that preantral follicles are unlikely to contribute to steroidogenesis. The antral follicles are the principal source of estrogen, with the granulosa being the major site of synthesis. The interstitium can serve as a major source of progesterone (P) while the theca interna and granulosa cells of antral follicles may form additional sites for P synthesis on the afternoon of day 4. The CL in the hamster are very short-lived and steroidogenesis in them may proceed beyond the synthesis of progesterone. The present findings are correlated with the steroid levels found during the cycle. Appropriate comparisons are also made with the rat ovary.

    Notes: A consistent three-level time-split group finite-element method, suitable for the computation of viscous compressible flows in irregular geometric domains, is described. Exploitation of the group12 formulation permits an accurate and economical algorithm to be developed in a generalized-co-ordinate (ζ,η) space. A variable sweep cycle is used to accelerate convergence to the steady state. The method is demonstrated by computing laminar and turbulent flow past a trailing edge. The method uses an algebraic eddy viscosity model to represent turbulence and produces results in close agreement with the experiments and computations of Viswanath et al8.
