Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Patients with congenital bilateral paralysis of the facial nerve ( Mcebius syndrome) or acquired lesions (central neurofibromatosis) are emotionally handicapped by an expressionless face, as well as physically afflicted by the loss of sphincteric functions around the eyes and the mouth. Lagophthalmus endangers the cornea and the lifeless lips cause problems in eating and speaking. The lost function of the orbicularis occuli muscle can be partially restored through the implantation of magnets, while the drooping mouth can be improved by excision of mucosa and perioral implantation of fascia lata strips.
