    Notes: Summary A self-fertile trigeneric hybrid in the Triticeae involving species from the Hordeum, Triticum and Secale genera has been produced. The trigeneric hybrid was obtained by crossing octoploid triticale (x Triticosecale Wittmack) with octoploid tritordeum (H. chilense × T. aestivum amphiploid). The trigeneric hybrid presented a genome constitution AABBDDRHch and 2n=8X=56 chromosomes. The cytogenetical analyses showed no chromosome instability nor homeologous pairing between Hordeum and Secale chromosomes. In the F2 generation the chromosome number ranged from 42 to 52. Within this range, the plants with smaller numbers of chromosomes were more frequent. A preferential transmission of rye chromosomes could be inferred.

    Notes: Summary Hexaploid and octoploid tritordeums and their parents Hordeum chilense and Triticum spp. were screened for resistance to isolates of wheat and barley yellow and brown rusts. All H. chilense lines were highly resistant to both wheat and barley brown rust, few lines were susceptible to wheat yellow rust while susceptibility to barley yellow rust was common. In general the resistance of tritordeum is predominantly contributed by the wheat parent and apparently the genes for resistance in H. chilense are inhibited in their expression by the presence of the wheat genome.

    Notes: Summary Hordeum chilense is a wild barley with high crossability with Triticum, Hordeum and Secale. Its amphiploid with wheat, tritordeum, has potential as a new crop. H. chilense is highly resistant to the powdery mildew diseases of both wheat and barley. Whereas tritordeum is resistant to barley powdery mildew, its reaction to wheat powdery mildew is similar to that of its wheat parent. However H. chilense contributes to a reduced density of mildew colonies. This quantitative resistance of tritordeum is diluted at higher ploidy levels.

    Notes: Summary Hordeum chilense is a wild barley extensively used in wide crosses in the Triticeae. It could be a valuable source of resistance to Fusarium culmorum and Septoria nodorum. Some H. chilense x Triticum spp. amphiploids, named tritordeums, were more resistant than the parental wheat line to these diseases, others were not. Average contents of ergosterol and deoxynivalenol (DON) suggested that resistance to colonization by Fusarium was the highest for Hordeum chilense, followed by tritordeum and wheat in decreasing order. In particular, the H. chilense genotypes H7 and H17 enhanced the wheat resistance to F. culmorum in its tritordeum offsprings. Resistance to S. nodorum in tritordeum was not associated with tall plant height. There is sufficient genetic variation for resistance to F. culmorum and S. nodorum among tritordeum to allow the breeding of lines combining short straw and resistance to both diseases.

    Notes: Abstract Hexaploid tritordeum is an amphiploid derived from the cross between Hordeum chilense and durum wheat. This amphiploid has shown potential for bread making, which has been associated to the prolamins from H. chilense. The role of each prolamin subunit on the gluten strength in tritordeum has been evaluated. Advanced progenies from two hexaploid tritordeum crosses were analysed for prolamins composition and gluten strength. Six loci were found for the prolamins synthesised at the Hch genome, which showed significant effects on gluten strength. Although these tritordeum lines represent only a small proportion of the genetic variability available in the development programme for this new crop, a certain degree of variation for prolamins composition was detected. In fact, up to three allelic variants have been detected for some loci, which have shown different effect on gluten strength in tritordeum. Each of these six loci appeared on the same linkage group that corresponded to chromosome 1Hch. The search of new variants for these loci could be useful for tritordeum quality breeding and, using tritordeum as a bridge species, this genetic variability could be introgressed into bread wheat.

    Notes: The optical modes of DNA that displace one strand against the other are modeled by the motion of an oscillator in an asymmetric quartic double-well potential whose minima represent the A- and B-conformations. Assuming that the variation of the polarizability during vibration derives mainly from the tilting of the base rings relative to the helix axis, the total polarizability tensor is shown to possess approximately ellipsoidal symmetry and to depend nonlinearly on the instantaneous displacement of the two strands. The Raman spectrum of a collection of randomly oriented molecules is calculated. It consists of one or more peaks with characteristic shape. The depolarization ratio is 3/4, independent of molecular conformation and frequency. The results are discussed in the light of existing experimental and theoretical information.

    Notes: Analogs of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) were synthesized and screened as bronchodilators with the ultimate goal of enhancing the potency and extending the duration of action of the native peptide. Several design approaches were applied to the problem. First, the amino acid residues required for receptor binding and activation were identified. A model of the active pharmacophore was developed. With knowledge of the secondary structure (NMR) of the peptide, various analogs were synthesized to stabilize α-helical conformations. Having achieved a level of enhanced bronchodilator potency, our approach then concentrated on identification of the sites of proteolytic degradation and synthesis of metabolically-stable analogs. Two primary cleavage sites on the VIP molecule were identified as the amide bonds between Ser25-Ile26 and Thr7-Asp8. This information was used to synthesize cyclic peptides which incorporated disulfide and lactam ring structures. Analog work combined the best multiple-substitution sites with potent cyclic compounds which resulted in identification of a cyclic lead peptides. This compound, Ro 25-1553, exhibited exceptionally high potency, metabolic stability, and a long duration of action and may be an effective therapeutic for the treatment of bronchospastic diseases. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The preparation and reactivities of cyclohexyne and aryne complexes of platinum(0) and nickel(0) are reviewed. These complexes undergo insertions with unsaturated molecules such as alkenes, alkynes, isocyanides, CO and CO2. In the case of the nickel- benzyne complexes, consecutive insertions are observed with alkynes, leading to substituted naphthalenes with good regioselectivities. A possible mechanism for these double insertions, based on a combination of steric and electronic factors, is discussed in detail.

    Notes: The sequential block copolymerization of diphenylmethyl methacrylate (DMA) and trityl methacrylate (TrMA), initiated by diphenyl methyl lithium in THF at -78°C followed by hydrolysis and methylation with diazomethane, leads to the formation of an isotacticsyndiotactic stereoblock poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) of narrow molecular weight and block length distribution. Complete conversion of DMA is shown to be essential, since the presence of small quantities of this monomer during the polymerization of TrMA significantly lowers the isotactic content of this block. Polymerization times of at least 12 h were found to be necessary for complete polymerization of the TrMA.
