    Notes: Abstract A procedure has been developed to isolate cyanobacteria from the aquatic fern Azolla. The method is based upon recovery of cyanobacterial “bundles” from digests of plants and use of this material as a massive inoculum for nitrogen-free media, followed by prolonged incubation in light. The procedure appears to select for those cells capable of growth in vitro. Isolated cyanobacteria were found to resemble Anabaena sp. morphologically but were capable of heterotrophic growth and had high nitrogenase activity when grown on fructose in the dark.

    Notes: XPS and contact angle measurements have been used to investigate the surface modification of an alkyl-acrylate/polysiloxane co-polymer by plasma-discharge treatments. The improved wettability brought about by the plasma treatments is shown to result from the oxygenation of the surface layers and the conversion of the polysiloxane component to a silica-like phase. By analysis with MgKα, AlKα, and AgLα induced XPS this oxygenation is shown to decrease with depth. The total thickness of this altered zone has been estimated by comparing these results with data from argon ion bombardment studies.

    Notes: The surface chemical analysis of a polymeric drug delivery system has been undertaken using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The molecular specificity of static SIMS is demonstrated by the detection of the molecular ion of the drug and its principal fragments within the polymer surface in both positive and negative ion modes. SIMS imaging of molecular ions specific to the drug illustrate its uniform lateral distribution in the interfacial polymer surface network.

    Notes: The oxygen glow discharge plasma modification of a contact lens material has been studied using SSIMS. SSIMS provides evidence at the molecular level for the conversion of surface organosiloxane species to inorganic silica functionalities with treatment time. These findings shown an excellent correlation with a dramatic increase in surface hydrophilicity, as derived from surface energy studies, on plasma treatment. This study further illustrates the potenial of SSIMS in the determination of the molecular changes at the surface during the plasma treatment process.
