Notes: Abstract In paediatric radiology intestinal biopsies for the diagnosis of coeliac disease are performed using fluoroscopy. The radiation exposure to the child depends on the X-ray equipment. We report patient measurements from three different equipments (A, B and C) together with a phantom study simulating children of different thickness relative to age. The median values of the mean absorbed dose to the child in the irradiated volume were 1.2 mGy (A), 0.79 mGy (B) and 0.15 mGy (C). The results show that the increase in tube potential with increasing distance in one equipment decreases the dosage, and also that modern equipment should be employed. Particularly old image intensifiers should not be used. With an optimal choice of equipment the dosage to the child can be reduced fourfold. The combination of an optimal technique of sedation and an experienced operator can reduce the dosage tenfold.

Notes: Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate a pulsed laser transillumination technique based on time-resolved detection on breast-tissue-like phantoms. Experiments have been performed on tissue-like plastic phantoms with different scattering characteristics. The effects of time-gate width, size, localisation and refractive index of hidden objects have been scrutinised. Our study showed that the shorter the time-gate the higher the contrast. The contrast is very dependent on the size of the hole, whereas the full width half maximum is not. Furthermore, the investigation showed that the changes of early detected light in an experimental setting is due to scattering, and not to a higher speed of the transmitted light

Notes: Abstract 7-Hydroxycoumarin (7-HC) is a naturally occuring substance with a variety of biological activities, e.g. antitumoral and immunomodulatory action. the potential mechanisms of 7-HC action on tumor cells have been investigated in a model of mouse fibroblasts transformed by distinet retroviral vectors carrying the oncogenesmyc andras. Treatment of the different oncogenic transformants with 7-HC in non-cytotoxic concentrations causes a strong inhibition of their proliferative capacity as measured by growth curves. Furthermore, incubation of theras andmyc transformants with 7-HC abrogated soft agar colony formation when compared to untreated cultures. These changes in cell growth characteristics of the various oncogene-transformed mouse fibroblasts were transient, since removal of 7-HC from the cultures caused a reappearance of the transformed properties of these cells within 6 days. The 7-HC-mediated inhibition of the proliferative capacity of the transformants was preceded by a selective down-regulation of oncogene expression. These data suggest that 7-HC causes a reversible inhibition ofras- andmyc-induced neoplastic properties in transformed fibroblasts by selective down-regulation of retroviral RNA levels.

Notes: Abstract In 31 patients with 21 soft tissue and 10 bone tumors, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) were equally effective in delineating the margins of most soft tissue tumors, and the margins of bone tumors from fat and adjacent normal bone. However, MRI was superior to CT in delineating bone tumors from adjacent muscle, and in showing the relationships to bone of the deep margins of some soft tissue tumors. This was true because the quality of CT images around thick cortical bone often was severely degraded by streak artifact, which does not occur in MRI. Excellent anatomic detail was achieved on MRI by spin echo pulse sequences with short repetition times. Bone tumors were delineated best by spin echo 1000/30 images, and soft tissue tumors by spin echo 1000/30 or inversion recovery images.
