Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Hypnotics obtainable without prescription, especially the bromoureide derivatives, are gaining in importance in conjunction with suicides, attempted suicides and drug poisonings. The hitherto unexplained metabolism of the bromureides is discussed. By means of X-ray fluorescence analysis, it is possible to easily and quickly determine bromine in blood, urine, tissue and other biological material. Through the use of simpler methods of extraction, the inorganic bromine substances can be separated from the organic and each determined quantitatively. The organic bromine substances can be separated by means of paper and thin layer chromatography and sensitively identified with a reagent used for the detection of sugar. By utilizing a combination of the aforementioned methods, it is also possible to confirm ingestion of bromine-containing substances even after an extended period of time has elapsed.
