    Notes: The selectivity of capillary columns coated with biscyanopropyl siloxane stationary phases for the separation of fatty acid methyl esters has been optimized by means of computer-assisted column temperature optimization software. Temperature programming rates yielding the highest resolution in the shortest analysis time were selected for split, splitless, and on-column injection operated in the constant pressure and pressure programmed modes.

    Notes: In chromatography the separation power expressed in terms of peak capacity can be greatly enhanced by multidimensional techniques. The most important aspect of multidimensional chromatography is the precise location of the heart-cut window. Very often the reliability of this positioning is ensured by applying relatively large heart-cuts; this reduces the intrinsic selectivity offered by the technique.The best way of locating peaks in chromatography is by means of retention indices. This technique can also be used in multidimensional chromatography. A method is described whereby the heartcut window in multidimensional gas chromatography (MDGC) can be defined precisely.

    Notes: The capillary gas chromatographic (CGC) analysis of the der-matological drug trans-acitretin (NeotigasonR) and its cis metabolite is described. Separation of the methyl ester derivatives can be achieved on a 90% biscyanopropylsiloxane phase. The importance of using cold on-column injection and short, thin film capillary columns is discussed. For patients treated with the prodrug of acitretin, etretinate (TigasonR), i.e. the ethyl ester of Neotigason, three compounds have to be separated. Selectivity tuning is required for successful CGC separation. An alternative can be found in the selectivity of ion monitoring mass spectroscopy. Analysis of plasma samples involves liquid-liquid extraction, a derivatization step, and HPLC purification.

    Notes: A method is described for the detection of citrus juices adulterated by addition of industrial sugar products. The oligosaccharides maltotriose (DP3) and maltotetraose (DP4), both of which are absent from the natural sugar profile of citrus fruits, serve as markers. The sample preparation method includes clean-up on a solid phase ODS cartridge, fractionation of DP3 and DP4 carbohydrates by LC on aminopropyl silica gel, and derivatization of the collected sugars to form the oxime-trimethylsilyl derivatives. Capillary GC analysis is performed on a 30 m × 0.32 mm i.d. polydimethylsiloxane fused silica column applying cool on-column injection and FID detection. The detection limit for maltotriose and maltotetraose is about 1 mg l-1. Several orange and grapefruit juices were evaluated on their authenticity. Adulteration with crystalline sugar products cannot be detected with the described procedure.

    Notes: ---Static and dynamic headspace sampling have been applied for the enrichment of volatiles emitted by living plants. For solid phase microextraction (SPME) the sorptive fibers polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polyacrylate (PA) have been compared and, in accordance with the like-like principle, polar compounds exhibit more affinity for the PA fiber while apolar solutes favor the PDMS fiber. For dynamic sampling, tubes packed with PDMS particles show greater inertness than Tenax; some Tenax decomposition products, e.g. benzaldehyde and acetophenone, interfere with the analyses. With PDMS particles operated in the breakthrough mode, the obtained profiles are similar to those obtained by SPME on the PA fiber. Recoveries relative to a packed PDMS bed are 85% for Tenax, 2.4% for SPME-PDMS, and 6.2% for SPME-PA.
