    Notes: The tuning of selectivity by changing the flow rate has been investigated in HPLC: two columns with different retention characteristics were coupled in series via a T-piece and the relative retention of components chromatographed on the system were changed by varying the individual flow rates in the coupled columns. The flow rate alteration was performed by adding a second flow after the first column. The flow rate ratio necessary for optimum resolution can be easily calculated on the basis of the capacity factors measured on the individual columns. The performance of this method for adjusting selectivity has been demonstrated by using different column combinations to separate several mixtures containing chlorophenols, nitroaromatic compounds, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

    Notes: ---Existing methods for preparing frits in packed fused silica capillaries as used for electrochromatography and micro HPLC are not applicable to all silica based packing materials and involve a high thermal stress for both the stationary phase and the fused silica tubing including the polyimide coating. A new procedure for the production of such on-column frits under mild conditions by a sol-gel type reaction of polydimethoxysiloxane (PDMOS) is described in this paper. Reaction conditions were established for optimum mechanical stability and high permeability of the frits. Frits produced in this manner showed no noticeable effect on the overall efficiency.

    Notes: ---A method for the improvement of signal-to-noise ratios and hence detection limits in capillary gas chromatographic trace analysis of C2-C4 hydrocarbons was developed. It is based on the post column cryogenic trapping of the separated hydrocarbons using liquid nitrogen as coolant and its fast reinjection into the detector by rapid heating of the capillary tubing used for trapping. The improved signal-to-noise ratios were applied to decrease the sample volume and/or to lower the detection limit 10 to 27 times. The concentrations of these hydrocarbons in an urban air sample determined without and with post column cryogenic trapping were in good agreement but the precision was better when applying the cryogenic trapping mode.

    Notes: Differently pretreated glass capillaries were coated with hydroxy-terminated methyl or methyl-phenyl polysiloxane gum phases and cured at 340-360°C for several hours. The volatile reaction products formed during the baking procedure were analyzed and the retention behavior of various polar test compounds were investigated both before and after the heat treatment. The findings were used to establish a reaction scheme which explains crosslinking and surface bonding of hydroxy-terminated silicone phases in high-temperature-silylated glass capillaries. The principle has been extended to the immobilization of common endcapped silicone phases by mixing them with hydroxy-terminated phases.

    Notes: The effect of the superposition of electroosmotic flow and pressureinduced hydrodynamic counterflow on efficiency has been investigated for different capillary electrophoretic systems. Results are shown for 50 and 75 μm internal diameter capillaries at several voltage and counterpressure levels. Hydrodynamic counterflows were successfully applied in electrokinetic chromatography in order to delay the entry of a UV-active pseudostationary phase, tetraphenyl porphyrintetrasulfonate, into the detection zone allowing the separation of neutral nitroaromatics. The separations are based on the weak charge-transfer interactions between the porphyrin and the analytes.
