Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary 1. Contaminates which directly inhibit cholinesterase were found in crystalline preparations of insecticidal phosphorothionates and phosphorodithionates such as Methylparathion, Bromophos, Imidane and Dimethoate by means of a combined TLC-enzymatic method. 2. The largest portion of these direct inhibitors, which mainly consist of phosphorothionate oxidation products, could be eliminated by preparative layer chromatography. 3. Subsequent diminution in the amount of the direct inhibitors led to a considerable reduction of the I50 values of these preparations. 4. The results of these experiments confirm the hypothesis that phosphorothionates themselves do not inhibit cholinesterase. Rather, this latter action depends on the presence of contaminating oxidation products.
