    Notes: To our knowledge, this paper presents the first description of neuroendocrine complexes in invertebrates. Neuroendocrine complexes have been identified in the lamina propria of the snail gut by light microscopy using Giemsa-stained, deplasticized sections and by electron microscopy. Silver impregnations and immunocytochemical tests for 15 different peptide hormones yielded negative results. The ultrastructure of the snail neuroendocrine complexes is basically similar to that of neuroendocrine complexes in vertebrates. They are composed of endocrine cells and associated unmyelinated nerve processes, both being surrounded by a discontinuous glial sheath and a basement membrane. The endocrine cells contain small (139 nm), round, dense-cored granules. The presence of complex multivesicular bodies and autophagic vesicles in the endocrine cells suggests that excess granules may be eliminated by a process of crinophagy. Some of the neuroendocrine complexes were seen to form connections with the epithelium by means of an endocrine cell cytoplasmic process, a fact that strongly suggests a functional integration between the intestinal epithelium and the enteric nervous system.

    Notes: Pancreatic ducts of young posthatching Rana temporaria tadpoles are the main component of the developing pancreas. At this stage (free-swimming tadpoles with internal gills), duct cells display a high degree of development of basal and lateral outfoldings of the cell membrane with extensive interdigitation, and numerous mitochondria are present throughout the cytoplasm. Wide intercellular spaces also exist, sometimes forming canaliculi-like structures. Since these traits are characteristic of cells engaged in osmotic regulation, we suggest the possibility that this temporary duct system participates in such control. Duct cells in tadpoles with well-developed hindlegs have diminished interdigitation, and mitochondria are localized apically. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: The purpose of this paper is to justify the well-known relaxation spectra observed in dilute polymer solutions from extended irreversible thermodynamics. This is performed by elevating the viscous stress tensor to the status of independent variable, in addition to the usual variables, like temperature and mass density. In particular, it is shown that our thermodynamic description encompasses the Rouse and Zimm models. Memory functions for the longitudinal and transverse correlation functions are derived and analyzed within the frame work of molecular hydrodynamics.

The OIB type A were formed by a process of twisting and progressive spiralling of profiles of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER).     Notes: Silver methods were successfully applied to semithin sections of Epon-embedded material, in bronchial epithelium of the chicken lung, as well as in stomach and gut of the frog. Silver methods with some modifications characterize very well the cytoplasmic argyrophilic and argentaffin granules. They give good results in plastic-embedded material.

    Notes: The development and arrangement of the sphenomandibular ligament of 60 human embryos and fetuses were studied. Meckel's cartilage appeared as a single, continuous fibrous structure lying between the mandibular lingula and the malleus of the middle ear in fetuses of 210 mm crown-rump length (22 weeks of age) and over. This structure constitutes the malleolomandibular ligament, and two clearly differentiated portions bound by the tympanosquamosal fissure could be seen: a juxtaarticular portion, inserted on the posterior edge of the interpterygoid aponeurosis, and a tympanic portion, onto which the disc of the temporomandibular joint inserted. Some of the authors consider that if tension is applied to the sphenomandibular ligament this may injure the middle ear. The anatomical arrangement of the sphenomandibular ligament could explain these injuries. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Ejaculated spermatozoa from four different boars were used to evaluate the acrosome reaction during in vitro fertilization with homologous ovulated oocytes. The acrosome reaction was assessed according to a peroxidase-labeling peanut agglutinin method and a triple-stain technique. An increase in the proportion of living sperm with reacted acrosomes was observed after preincubation and 2 hr of coincubation (P 〈 0.05). The percentage of true acrosome-reacted sperm remained reasonably constant throughout coincubation. In vitro penetration rates of oocytes varied among boars, but no relationship was found between fertilization rates of oocytes and maximum percentages of acrosome reacted living sperm. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Myelopoiesis in lymph nodes was studied in newborn mice under normal conditions and after treatment with trypan blue and carbon particles. In the mouse lymph node, myelopoiesis normally takes place between the fourth and twelfth day after birth, then decreases while an intense proliferation of the lymphocytic population simultaneously takes place. Myelopoiesis manifests itself as clusters of cells, mainly of the neutrophilic line, located around post-capillary venules (PCV's) in the medulla. The injection of trypan blue or carbon particles (India ink) causes an enhancement of myelopoiesis and a delay in the development of the lymphocytic population. Myelopoiesis includes not only granulopoiesis but also the formation of erythroid clusters and occasional megakaryocytes. Three possibilities should be considered to explain the enhancement of myelopoiesis: (1) blockade of the reticuloendothelial system caused by overloading with particulate matter; (2) induction of humoral myelopoiesis-stimulating factors; and (3) stimulation of pluripotent stem cells through dye injection.

    Notes: Lymph node nerve endings have been studied in 1- to 48-day-old mice. Serial sections of Epon-embedded lymph nodes were observed under the electron microscope to find the nerve endings. Most lymph node nerve fibers finally reach the smooth muscle cells of arterioles and muscular venules. Both kinds of vascular endings are similar, although endings are less numerous on venules. Nerve endings consist of one or more nerve processes surrounded by a usually incomplete Schwann cell sheath; frequently, axons show wide areas directly facing the muscle cells. The distance between such a naked axon and a myocyte ranges from 100 to 800 nm. Small granulated and clear vesicles are especially abundant in varicosities of nerve processes that are located very close to muscle cells. Nerve endings of lymph node vasculature probably correspond to vasomotor sympathetic adrenergic endings, regulating the degree of contraction of vessels which have a muscular layer. Other kinds of nerve endings also exist in lymph nodes: some axons appear free in the stroma and contact the surfaces of reticular cells; the latter also extend delicate cytoplasmic processes that surround the axons. The functional significance of nerve cell-reticular cell contacts is unknown.
