    Notes: The olfactory organ of the silkmoth Antheraea polyhemus is the feathered antenna which carries about 70,000 olfactory sensilla in the male. It develops within 3 weeks from a leaf-shaped epidermal sac by means of segmental primary and secondary indentations which proceed from the periphery towards the centerline. During the first day post-apolysis, the antennal epidermis differentiates into segmentally arranged, alternating sensillogenic and non-sensillogenic regions. Within the first 2 days post-apolysis, the anlagen of olfactory sensilla arise from electron-dense mother cells in the sensillogenic epidermis. The axons of the developing sensilla begin to form the primary innervation pattern during the second day. The sensilla develop approximately within the first 10 days to their final shape, while the indentations are completed during the same period of time. The indentations are most probably driven by long basal extensions of epidermal cells, the epidermal feet. Primary indentations follow the course of segmentally arranged tracheal bundles and form the segments of the antenna. The secondary indentations follow the course of the primary segmental nerves which are reconstructed by this process. During the remaining time of development, the cuticle of the antenna and the sensory hairs is secreted by the epidermal and the hair-forming cells. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: Theoretical models describing the dynamics of multicomponent polymer mixtures are reviewed. Some detailed derivations are shown to make the basic assumptions clear and to ease the comparison between these models. The effects of random noise and memory functions on the time evolution of dynamical correlation functions are examined. The long-range hydrodynamic interactions or mode-coupling effects are also included. A possible extension of these models to the kinetics of spinodal decomposition in solutions of polymer mixtures is briefly discussed.

    Notes: We present new results on the behaviour of single chains in homo-and copolymer blends which are beyond the rendom phase approximation (RPA). The radius of gyration of a chain in the blend was found to depend strongly on the interactions as well as the effective diffusion constant of a single chain in the blend or copolymer melt. Note that these results cannot be obtained in the original formulation of the RPA. They are based on the effective Hamiltonian of the chain in the medium. In the equation found for the self diffusion constant of a single chain, Ds, the second term is directly the value of the effective potential at zero wave vector. Thus the measurement of Ds would detect the screened potential at q = 0. Experimental verification of these results is in progress.

    Notes: The static scattering properties of weakly charged copolymers in solution are investigated. The cases of symmetrical and nonsymmetrical diblocks are considered and various structure factors calculated. The electrostatic interaction is introduced via a combination of the random-phase approximation and the Debye-Hückel approximation. Several cases of charge distributions are considered. In particular, diblock copolymers made of neutral and charged monomers and oppositely charged monomers are considered. All the cases deal with systems in the homogeneous disordered phase where no mesophase structures or micelle formations can be observed.

    Notes: The relationship between the cut growth and fatigue failure of natural rubber vulcanizates under repeated loading is examined. The cut growth behavior has been investigated using several types of test piece, and the results are shown to be consistent when interpreted in terms of the tearing energy concept developed previously. The most comprehensive data have been obtained by measuring the growth of a small cut in the edge of a strip cycled in simple extension. It is found that the cut growth per cycle is approximately proportional to the square of the maximum tearing energy attained during the cycle. Using this relation, the fatigue life of a specimen containing a small cut is deduced from elasticity theory as a function of initial cut size and maximum strain. Experimental results give good agreement with theory. A similar strain dependence is found for the fatigue life of die-stamped dumbbell test pieces with no intentionally produced flaws; this is consistent with the mechanism of failure being cut growth from small flaws present in the specimens. Their effective size is estimated to be about 2 × 10-3 cm, which is compatible with the observed superficial imperfections of the cut edges.

    Notes: A novel technique for the control of continuous synthesis of addition polymers with precisely controlled average molecular weight and minimum polydispersity has been developed. A control system adjusts the concentration of chain-transfer agent in the reactor feed to compensate for all other upsets, in the reactor inputs: initiator and monomer concentrations, temperature and feed rate. The technique has been evaluated quantitatively on a digital computer using a kinetic model of homogeneous, free-radical solution polymerization. In computational tests, the modeled control system generally held the instantaneous number-average chain length within 1%, and quickly returned it to the desired value in response to a wide variety of upsets. By generalizing the Schulz distributions to include termination by disproportionation, combination and chain-transfer, it is shown that changes in the molecular-weight distribution resulting from the action of the control system are minor.

    Notes: The applicability of Hertz's theory of impact to the case of rigid spheres colliding with rubber has been studied over a wide range of impact conditions. In general, the theory is adequate; but in many practical cases, the influence of the finite thickness of the sample is significant. Using previously published data on the influence of thickness on static indentation measurements, this effect can be predicted and good agreement with experiment is found. Resilience measurements have been made over a range of impact conditions. The time of impact, rather than its severity as such, was found to be the factor governing the resilience for the unfilled materials studied, provided that there was no slip of the sample relative to its holder. Slippage can occur if the sample is too thin, due to the shear stresses developed at the rear surface, and this results in the observed resilience being anomalously low.

    Notes: The use of plasma deposition to introduce sulfonate groups to the surface of a polyurethane was attempted. In previous work, the bulk incorporation of sulfonate groups was found to improve the blood contacting properties of the base polyurethane but physical properties in the hydrated state were adversely affected. Plasma deposition schemes involving ammonia and sulfur dioxide were utilized in an attempt to incorporate sulfonate groups. Surface characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and contact angle measurements was used to follow polymer surface rearrangement dynamics and to address the issue of plasma chemistry specificity. Concerns of reaction specificity were alleviated by using the plasma as a pretreatment which is followed by a chemical surface derivatization.
